Senior Research Paper: Researching and Writing About Artists and Their Work

Overview and Steps 1-2

Overview: You will be choosing one artist, either from the following list or a contemporary artist (or 20th Century artist) of equal historic merit (he or she must have adequate primary and secondary source material from which to research). The research you gather will help you prove your thesis about specific pieces of art (1-5).

Choose an artist whose work you like, and even more importantly, who you think makes an interesting statement through his or her artwork that you think you can explain for about 10 pages.

Step 1: I have set up hyperlinks for about 40 artists. Spend the next 40 minutes or so choosing an artist that you would like to focus for the next few weeks. You will want to have a back-up choice or two for various reasons. I know a bit about each of these artists and have an idea of what you will face if you choose to research any of them. I’ll be around to answer questions. Enjoy.

For some of these artists, it is just as easy to do an image search.

Painters and Artists:

White Cube also has a good list of contemporary artists.

I chose these artists because they should be easy enough to find research on but have not been written on endlessly. If you have an artist in mind, I’d be happy to add it to the list.

Step 2: Post a Comment on which artist you want and why (brief). Check with me first. You can pick someone that is not on the list. I would also like you to hyperlink the title of an image that you like from the artist, so a quick minilesson:

Kevin Ta 5 said...Alright, here’s my quick mini lesson on how to hyperlink in comment boxes. Say you want to make a link like

this.

All you have to do is type the following into the comment box:

<"a href=http://www.google.com">"this"<"/a">

and get rid of the quotation marks. When you publish it, it will look like:

this

Replace the URL (making sure you have the http:// part) and the “this” and it’s as simple as that. Remember that the Preview button is your friend. Hope that helps.

JerryUelsmann house

This picture draws my attention because I am a fan of pictures that lack color. Jerry Uelsmann creates an image that lacks color but tells a story. This house on the tree symbolizes a strong foundation and a strong root the meaning behind this image fascinates me.

The artist I chose to do my research on is Francis Bacon. I chose Francis Bacon because his art work is dark and seems to be smudged. I like this picture because it doesn’t say that all art work has to be bright and happy. His paintings are like smudged and seem to fade and I though it was pretty interesting. Also his paintings seem there’s a lot going on.

The artist that I have chosen is Gerhard Ritcher. I chose him because I love his photo paintings, which look like a "photo" but it is a painting with oil on canvas. The picture that I have chosen is Sleeper (Barbara), by looking at the texture and pattern I can't believe that it is not a photo but a painting. It is really amazing, and every single part is painted to be like a real photo, the hair, the ear and the earring, I can't find anything that can make me believe that it is not a photo.

The artist that I have chosen is Larry Rivers one of Larry Rivers paintings that immediately caught my attention is Golden Oldies. I’m influenced by Larry Rivers because he doesn’t use plain original colors he wants this panting to pop and keep your eyes running threw the canvas. In this painting there is so much going on in this oil canvas. Just like most of Larry Rivers’s other paintings like Now and Then, The journey and Stones sketched for Us.

The artist that I have chosen to research is Sandy Skoglund. I have chosen to research Skoglund’s artwork because she is very creative; she decides to use interesting pieces to make her painting unique. She has a unique way of using the objects that normally would not be used in a painting. And in most of her work she uses bright colors which draw in an audience.

I’d like Sandy Skoglund as my artist because I enjoy her weird yet interesting artwork. I like the colors she uses and that she uses multiples of her objects. Some of her artwork reminds me of music, mostly 80s and 70s, and I like how I get the thought of music from a painting.

I picked Wangechi Mutu painting because it different. I never saw any thing like her paintings. She’s a different type of artist. She takes images from magazines and makes a collage with is and makes her own image. I like the colors and the figure of the picture. I feel that I can write a lot about this picture.

The artist is Willem de Kooning and the reason I chose him was, because he has this interesting painting that is broken up in 4 pieces and the fact that later in his career he made a complete shift to abstract painting. There are extreme differences between his normal paintings and the abstract paintings.

I chose to do my research paper on the artist named Jerry N. Uelsmann. Uelsmann’s photographs are really eye popping because he puts weird combinations of Humans and nature together too give it an appealing look. Materialistic things or objects verses real life things or objects. It shows a great deal of imagery and really gets u thinking. I like him a lot because Uelsmann’s photographs have many stories to them.

I artist I have chosen to do my research paper on is Robert Rauschenberg. One of the main reasons I chose him was because he served in the military so I can picture an artist that has been there probally has some experiences or memories imprinted in his work. Also the unique mixing of pictures in Rauschenberg’s work really caught my eye

The artist that I have picked is Marcel Duchamp and I have picked him because it is very weird and hard to figure out especially since he says what it is and then you try to see and compare the title to the picture and I like it because the paintings that I have chosen are very abstract so you have to look at them in different ways from a distance on the side and I like to try and find out what it is while looking for what he says it is.

The artist I have chosen to research on was Wangechi Mutu. The reason why I have chosen this artist was because her paintings are very interesting and different then any other painting I have seen before. She uses different parts of other images and mixes it together to make her own image. In my opinion Wangechi Mutu is trying to show something in her paintings and wants the viewers to understand what she is trying to say in her images.

The artist that I choose is Sandy Skoglund. I think that her artworks are very interesting and eye catching. Most of her artworks are like a real photograph with a special element all around the picture, for example babies, wild animals and leaves. Those special elements are always in sharp colors with a contrast with the background. I like her style of combination.

I (Johanna) chose the artist Sandy Skoglund because her photograph is so alive and it catches my attention as soon as I see it or glance at it. Sandy Skoglund eyes behind the lens have a special touch to it because of how she views things in a different way. Sandy Skoglund is a brilliant and creative photographer. Her works is different and use things you wouldn’t normally wouldn’t find. Also her work can be seen as a comparison to something else pictured and the photo. Photographs are different and out there, that catches anyone’s attention who views it.

I feel that the painter Jean Michael Basquiat is a very odd type of painter because when looking at his paintings they give me a sense of humor because he is not creative his paintings are with no sense but that is what I feel that he wanted people to see in his paintings that he is not a good painter but he adds on style so people could see the how paintings can become a whole different type of story in identifying it.

I choose to work on the artist Jerry Uelsmann and I choose this picture because I find it extremely interesting. When I look at it I see a women who is in the clouds, which I believe is heave, and she is standing in front of a big house which could be her child hood home in the country. To me, she is going back to when she was happiest, as a child at home.

After looking at a few artworks, I’ve become interested at looking at his artwork. I would like to learn more about Lichtenstein and do some research on his artwork. Lichtenstein’s artwork looks very creative and interesting. Some of the artwork that shows people in them looks like they’ve come from a comic strip which is why I find his artwork interesting.

I decided to choose Trevor Winkfield’s art to do my research paper on. His art is out of the box and it makes you think that he is trying to tell two sides of a story. It’s very interesting to look at and he seems to put a lot of random things in his are. There is a lot of repetition in his art to.

The artist I chose is Jim Dine because after I saw all his paintings I found interesting the simplicity of his art and almost of his art is in Lithograph and hand painting. The artist I wanted to do is Max Ernst and his painting that I chose to do is The Fireside Angel, I picked him because his paintings are creative because it’s like a picture of a deformed beast. But it’s a bunch of different pieces of another painting an image of something else. I like it mostly because it’s like a imaginary thought that we would think of back when we were little.

The artist I have chosen is Alice Neel. I chose this artist because I like her paintings. Alice Neel paints portraits. I like her paintings because she leaves it to the imagination of us to fill in the story behind this person. She also distorts the persons face or body and lets us know that they are not perfect. In her paintings people are usually not smiling most seem upset and depressed with a story to tell. The Family Alice Neel

The artist I chose is Vik Muniz. I chose him because his style is very different; he used the different way to show his picture, his product. I had never seen a person used junk to make a picture, he did. I think his style is very cool. He used a lot of junk to finish his picture. He wasn’t waste anything to make his picture, he just used those people won’t use again, the junk to finish his picture, to show what he to show us. Also, the picture of pigment is also very cool. His picture of pigment let me think of comfortable, his color, his image are so match, so perfect. In those pictures, I like the one called “Montagne Saint-Victoire” this picture is the one of picture of pigment, it is seen from Montbriand, after Cezanne.

The artist that I chose to do my research on is David Hockney. I chose him because each of his paintings have a meaning to them. My personal favorites are The Railing and Garrowby Hill. But the one that I like the most is The Railing, because in different parts of the painting, there are these things that look like worms, and it looks like they are trying to break free from where they have been held prisoner for a long time.

Once I saw Jerry Uelsmann work I was amazed. He delivers so much mystery in his photos it’s breath taking. The viewer can see that he takes these pictures and gives a lot of effort to make his work look so good. I am mostly blown away by the themes he uses it makes me wonder what could possibly be going through his mind at the moment he creates his master piece. I've always loved art all my life but I never really got that feeling I get when I see a painting when I see a photo because to me pictures really never gave me that inspiration but once I saw Jerry's work I was truly and utterly astonished. his work really inspired me to view photographing in a different light.

The artist I have chosen to research is Roy Lichtenstein. I chose him because his art is very contemporary and I enjoy his interesting paintings, which seem almost to be computerized images. His brush stroke is perfect and he is very critical of hiding any noticeable strokes, almost as if he is trying to conceal the fact that it is actually a painting. Many of his paintings, if not all, are very similar to comic book strips. This intrigues me because there are not many artists that hold the creative imagination to paint “comic-like paintings.”
