OPTIC. I find Walter Pauk’s theory quite useful when writing about an image.[1] The AP Art History Course also uses this Acronym as a successful approach to writing about visual art. I have adapted it here with further commentary and explanation in light of your specific goals.
Post your writing in the comment box with the following five categories. You will receive full credit (20 points) for one thousand words. (15 points) for 750 words. (10 points) for 500 words. (5 points) for 250 words. You are eventually going to have to write a longer paper and you will thank your future self for the writing you did here because you will be able to pull from it later.
- Overview: Conduct an Overview of the visual or graphic. I recommend an extensive brainstorming process here.
- Parts: Key in on the Parts of the visual by noting any elements or details that seem important. The old cliché goes “a picture is worth a thousand words”, which translates to about three pages. I think this is a good rule of thumb, but by no means a fixed rule. Describe what you see. Where do your eyes go to first? Then what? Follow the natural progress of where your eyes go. Give as much detail as possible.
- Title: Explain the Title (if one is present) and its relation to the piece of art. Even an “untitled piece” may tell you about the artist’s aesthetic.
- Interrelationships: Use the title, or your theory, and the parts of the visual as your clues to detect and specify the Interrelationships in the graphic. In other words, this is where you develop your thesis about the image and connect ideas.
- Conclusion: Draw a Conclusion about the piece as a whole.

The Fall of Icarus
The main idea of the canvas Landscape with the Fall of Icarus c. Oil on canvas is that it shows a foreshadowing of what is to be after icarus meets his end because of the sun and because he didn’t heed his fathers words, thus that was his downfall. Now in the canvas there is many things going on in this picture, so many things that it is hard where to begin. On the far top right, it’s looks to be something of a hill or a trail on a mountain side with a little grass and soil, then it breaks to stone round steps going down, then up again into what looks like woods on the side of the hill or mountain trail. Along this path there are tree’s and branches that are sticking out along the side of this and many leaves on those trees. It looks to be summer or spring in this picture, very warm and comfortable. The people are wearing light garments and such, but nothing to heavy to give us the hint that it would be could out, but you never know they could be used to the weather and they only dress like that because that’s all they have and they wont have anything else because it is hard to get more then one pair of garments on the count of it needed to b made by a tailor and it could be to much for the people there, so they wear the same cloths almost every day and even to bed, then wash them near the river bank or lake or where ever. On the hill side or mountain side I see what looks to me a man or a women, hard to tell thought because the person has long hair like a women, but men can have hair like that as well and it can trick you. I’ll saw it’s a man and he seems to be wearing a dress like garment with a red fluffy under shirt, underneath the dress like garment. Also it seems the man has an apron on and stockings as well, with old shoes. He’ seems to be pushing a plow with the help of his donkey or horse. And now after just looking very close to the picture the stairs I talked about earlier are not actually stairs at all, but are ripped up soil, from the plow and it seems he did it all the way up or down from the hill/mountain side and he is working his way across the mountain/hill side trying to finish his work while all the other people in the background try to finish what they are doing. This guy looks like he hasn’t taken a break at all, maybe working all day, from sunrise to probably sunset. I’m sure all the people respect all the wok he does for them, with the plowing and farming for the village or where ever they all live. He seems like he might even have a family and is doing this to support them and to make them money and bring home the bacon so to speak. The next part of the canvas I see is the Sheppard, which seems to be on a lower area of the mountain or hill, almost like an island, but not totally, because an island is an area surrounded by water and this is only surrounded by water on the left side of the whole area. On this small lower rock, there are a few trees, green and lushes with branches that curve in all direction, and from just looking at the color supports my theory of it being summer or spring or at least warm enough for it to be that color and everyone around to be wearing what they are wearing at the moment. The next what I see is all the sheep and they all look to be adult or old sheep, no baby lamb or anything that I can see. There are a tree on the right to the edge of the rocky land and on of them is eating from the are where the tree’s and bushes are, while the sheep behind that on is looking for something to eat on the ground, while the last one is near the water looking for something, what, I have no idea, but sheep are sheep. To the right of those I see another four sheep and all four are looking for food on that rocky land mass, right next to 3 others that are had to see but you can see there backs near the mountain or hill side. Then there is the Sheppard himself along with his fellow companion, which would be a sheep dog I would think, and the Sheppard himself looks like he is bored or something from watching all the sheep with his long wooden stick he is leaning on to keep himself awake from his boredom of being around he sheep all day. He is wearing a blue long sleeve shirt, pants and boots I think, with a backpack like item on his back or something along those lines. Next to him is more sheep ten or so from what I counted, but I’m sure there is more behind the hill/ mountain side or somewhere near there. Three of the sheep are near the water looking for something or maybe getting a drink while the other eight are on the ground perhaps looking for food the Sheppard threw on the ground for all the sheep he is watching oh so boringly. On the far right corner of the mountain side/ hill side there is a man what looks to be fishing or sitting by the water looking or finishing for...well fish. He seems to be wearing white robs with a belt and a helmet or a hat of some sort with something red underneath it. Then past that I see a fish, which at first I thought was a man who fell into the lake and was drowning, but saw it had a fine so thought to myself, never mind it was just a person or something, which might be icarus himself who fell into the deep blue sea. Then past all that I see a ship, and a island with a cave on it with some rocks near it and past that a city and the background and mountains and so much more that I could go on and on about.
In the 1558 Oil on canvas by Pieter Bruegel titled Landscape with the Fall of Icarus it looks like a look at scenery of an old country. There is a huge lake with ships and miniature islands in it. It has a castle in the middle right section of the lake. There is a small city stretched out to the side of the lake with mountains on the right side of that. Up close in the oil painting which happens to be before the river is a bridge on another miniature island with someone on it heading into the forest with his horse. After him in the oil painting on the same island is another man who is caring for his sheep.
The object in the oil painting that sticks out the most to me would be the man crossing the bridge with his horse. He is one of the biggest images that pop out when you first take a glimpse at the oil painting. I think the artist wanted him to pop because he is wearing a bright red sweater with a light greenish brown overall dress looking attire over the sweater. He also has some brown stockings and black shoes on. He is caring a stick that is pointed toward his horse in his left hand. His horse is a few feet ahead of him slowing galloping down the steps of the bridge it appears. Also in his other hand which happens to be his right hand he has a rope which is attached to the horse. One of his feet is in a sort of dancing position going down some steps on this bridge which is now starting to look somewhat of a hill with stairs in a circle around it. The man is also wearing a kind of helmet hat that is also a brown light greenish color; I don’t really know what that means it just sticks out to me. The man’s head is also down which you may automatically assume he is sad or watching his step coming down the hill. I assume he is doing both because when you look at the sky in the landscape you see many different colors, mostly light blues and yellows. I see that it is beautiful in a sort of sad way because the sun seems to be setting. Or maybe he is just late coming home. Maybe he sees he would not be home before sunset and feels sad for that reason. Whatever the reason is for his sadness it is an apparent fact that you can see his emotions shine though the art work in the oil painting. Behind one of the ships in the river is a pair of legs. It looks like someone fell out of the sky and landed in the water head first. Being that there is only three ships in the water and in the one closest to the man which appears to be bigger that a lot of images in the oil painting, you can clearly see the legs making a fast motion in the water because it is waving around were the legs are sticking out.
The title of the oil painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus is necessary because it is an oil painting of land and shows that the man blown up in size in the oil painting is in fact Icarus.
You can tell it is him because if the oil painting was a movie the main character would be blown up. The word fall in the title may symbolize that weather in the oil painting. I see that it has that fall and or autumn feel to it.
There are a lot of different colors and textures used in the oil painting but it seems to not have the summery feel that you would expect. It seems as if everyone in the oil painting is suffering. Icarus id tending to his horse in a sad mood, the man in back of him at the bottom of the hill tending to his sheep looks like he may be praying to God to help him, as if to say he is suffering. His head is pointed up and he looks as if he was in misery. Then there are the legs in the water trashing around to represent someone drowning. It looks like that person was dropped out of the sky and landed head first into the lake. There is also what appears to be and ice land on the top right hand corner of the oil painting. Also a few inches in front of the drowning person whose legs are thrashing about in the water is someone who appears to be attempting to go after the drowning victim. He probably is going after the person to save that person. All the other little islands in the lake have trees and forest so I believe the artist did that to shown not only the island close up with the man in the red sweater is doing something. I think he is proposing another idea that there is suffering outside that piece of land. He is trying to say there is more suffering on the other pieces of land that are in the oil painting. The trees in the oil painting have excellent detail and texture. Some even look as if they are die and or rotting away.
So in conclusion I believe that the1558 Oil on canvas by Pieter Bruegel titled Landscape with the Fall of Icarus is a looks into misery and sadness during the time period. For the simple reasons that the man in the red dewater is depressed maybe because of property, or running to his household. The trees in the oil painting that are die are another sign of sorrow misery and sadness. The person in the lake drowning expresses sorrow and the man going to get the person is expressing sadness and fear all at the same time. These are the reasons and examples I think explains the symbolization of sadness in the 1558 Oil on canvas by Pieter Bruegel titled Landscape with the Fall of Icarus for me.
In this painting done by Pieter Bruegel, named “Landscape with the fall of Icarus”, shows how a simple community, when people uses the nature or according the Greek myth they are their gods. Throughout the painting I see how farming or the working class, work for their own food to survive. The first thing that caught my eye was when skimming the picture the shepherd looks up to the sky and see’s a “god” fly across the sky, but it was really was Icarus. This man thought he was a god because man can’t fly if man can’t fly its breaking the law of gravity which man versus nature. Another observation that I seen in this painting is that a man has fallen into the water. That person that’s in the water is Icarus, when he and his father Daedalus attempts to flee from Crete because of Daedalus has been exiled from his homeland by Minos . The way that the father and son has decides to flee was by air, and that’s flying into the enormous skies they had to go through the air because they can not go on water nor land. So with this flee Icarus’s father Daedalus breaks the law of gravity and goes against the gods. The next part of the painting I set my eyes on was on the bottom right where a man fishing. The man that’s fishing is fishing from nature which would consider him another person from a working class. In the story Ovid the writer talks about all these working class looks towards into the sky and sees an object passes by their eyes, which they thought is not human, but what they don’t know is that it’s really a human in the working class just like themselves. Also that I picked up on was that Icarus that landed and died into the water has feathers flying everywhere, I thought that was interesting since he’s flying like a bird so feathers just randomly fly from his body. Another thing I observed near the death of Icarus is a animal looking down at Icarus. This animal I think is a bird that might his father that’s watching his son drown because of his own action, by breaking the laws of gods. Another one is that how the sun, water, and sun of located on the map. When Ovid talks about how if Icarus flies to close to the sun his wings would melt and if he got to low his wings would get weighed down. I think Ovid did this on purpose by putting the workers away from the sun and water. Last that caught my eye was at the bottom of this painting is the man plowing threw his field. Like the other people in the town this man is also in the same class as them, the working class. The working class basically like above works for their food and that’s how they survive by working off the nature that’s provides what they need like food, water, wood and etc. In this painting is just a normal class of men working on what they do best or their jobs and supporting their family with what they are doing, from fishing, plowing, and shepherd. The key part of this painting that I thought caught my eye was the Shepard. The man with the herd of sheep is standing looking towards the sky thinking that god has just flown by his town but he doesn’t realize that isn’t god. With that Icarus has made the gods angry by breaking their own laws by gravity. So now the gods punished Icarus and now he’s in a river or lake drowned by the water, but the community still thinks he’d god.
The title of the painting “Landscape with the fall of Icarus”, is referring how Daedalus is punished for his action by breaking the law of gravity which is Man versus Nature, with that god has punished Icarus for Daedalus action and has killed Icarus. In the title where it says Landscape which I thought has to connect with after Icarus died they named the land after him. Another observation that I made about the title Icarus is like a god so they named the story after him since all the working people thought he was a god but he really wasn’t. The reason I came to this is because you can see in the painting that the fall of Icarus is on the bottom right. In the painting by Pieter Bruegel, the title, my theory, and clues are the similar to what I have thought. Pieter Bruegel wants to show readers how Man Versus Nature and nature always prevails. My example is when god killed Icarus because of Daedalus action by going against the gods by figuring out the way to fly and breaking the gravity law. Pieter Bruegal also shows that the working class doesn’t know what they’re doing. Every day they work and work to survive. But they don’t really think about what they’re doing they are more worried about their selves. But what they really need to figure out is where their getting all these food, water, sheep, fish and etc. and that’s from nature. Nature is also the god in the Greek religion. God used Icarus as a scapegoat, he killed him to warn other working class’s if you break and laws from gravity or stopping nature to take its course then there would be consequence to pay. Since Icarus was supposedly god in this town, the town was named after him. In conclusion Pieter Bruegel uses plenty of different aspects of how the working class utilizes the everyday jobs to survive like; fishing for food, plowing for food, being a shepherd and etc. Bruegel also relates this painting to the story by showing that people on the land is looking up at Icarus and Daedalus flying over their heads and falling down. In this painting there are many ways the connects with the story of Daedalus and Icarus.
The Landscape with the fall of Icarus
What caught my eye when I first looked at the Painting were the legs of Icrarus in the sea and the man in the white sitting on the edge of the cliff pointing at him. The detail of the place where Icarus was swallowed has so much detail and the water is moving so much around him, as if to make sure that the sea got him; because it looks like from the position of his legs that he was struggling to get out. What also made me pay attention was that he fell head first. So I think the artist was showing how angry nature was at Deadulas that they took his son away and “hushed” him completely to the point that his son didn’t even get a chance to scream for help from his father to save him. The colour of the water of the sea around Icarus is so dark, darker than any part of the sea. It also looks like the water around the area where he got swallowed was infected because the colour of the water was a dark shade of green, and the surrounding water after Icarus looks clean and calm. That area in the painting in my point of view, is the most related to the title because it is like the artist wanted us to look at the way he died and how badly it affected everything around him. The man in the white looked like he was pointing at Icarus. But when I looked closer, it looked like he was more pointing at how dirty the water was around him. He was also leaning too much off the cliff that he looked like he was going to fall because he witnessed him dying and the gods wanted to take him too probably because he maybe saw it more as a murder than an awful death.
The next thing I saw was the shepherd staring at the sky with his dog. Their faces looked like they were in total shock. They looked like they were amazed, it was so amazing that the artist wanted us to see that the dog even paid attention that it looks wrong for a human to be flying, like it knew that it was only the birds who were allowed or able to do this. The shepherd also looked like he was hypnotized looking at them for such a long time that his sheep started to go away from him, and there were actually two or more sheep that were getting closer to the water and looked like they were about to fall. It was like nature was so scared, that they were trying to teach the shepherd as well that he cannot keep on dreaming of something that he is not supposed to be able to do, and if he looks too closely at the form or the shape of Deadalus’s wings, he will loose what he owns, which are the sheep. Just like how Deadalus lost his son, because he got nature mad by going against its rules and creating something that was supposed to be out of his hand. The shepherd looked like he was tranced at the sight for such a long time that he was feeling dizzy and looked like he was holding on to his pole tight because he looked like he was going to fall too if he doesn’t stop looking, or saying it correctly would be is nature would kill him if he does not stop looking at its traitor.
The next thing that caught my eye, were the birds that were flying. I realized that the artist was trying to show us that the birds were aware to not fly too high. The birds were low and no one was paying attention to them. On the other hand Icarus and Deadalus, well, Deadalus was so high and you can tell by the position of the shepherd’s face. After I saw the birds, that were flying, I noticed that there was also a bird sitting on a branch, as if it knew better than to do what the other birds were doing, or as if he was scared. Maybe he was scared, because if you look closely, the bird that is just sitting on the branch is on the same side the man in the white shirt is, and where Icarus was being swallowed. Maybe it was the event of him falling that “hushed” the bird from falling, or maybe he was a breed from whom Deadalus killed and re incarnated, and it was just there as symbolism.
Maybe because I was paying close attention to the place where Icarus was being hushed, that the first thing I saw next was the dead branches behind the man in the white shirt. And what I have finally realized is something that I should have seen a long time ago was that, everything on the side of where Icarus had been hushed was dead, or about to die, and everything else everywhere else was being infected by their sight because they were getting close to their death too. I have said it in every paragraph myself and I just realized it now, that I, myself, have said that the sheep were about to die, the shepherd was about to die, the man in the white shirt was about to die, the sea was infected by Icarus’s act against nature, and the branches were dead too. So now I can say that there is a strong imagery of death in this painting.
The next thing that I see is related to it as well. The ship. The ship is being carried strongly by the winds, away from Icarus as if to take away all the chances of him being saved, and to not allow the people on the ship to be infected with his thoughts of beating nature like him and his father, and if they did see, then the ship was being blown fiercely to warn them of what nature would do to any of them if they think of challenging nature like them. Even the next ship closer to it is being strongly blown away, and you can’t even say that it is a coincidence, because in the distant ships, near them, they are not being fiercely blown away. In fact they are not being blown at all.
The next thing that I see, which actually to say the truth I have seen from the beginning but saw no significance of him at that time, is the man with the horse. He is first of all the biggest part of the painting, and second, he is the only human in the painting, who wasn’t paying attention, to anything that was going on around him. Not because he was too busy doing his work, or because he didn’t know that something was happening. It was because he knew better than to look at nature’s traitor, and you can see it in his face because he is lowering is head and only looking at the floor, where he belongs, and he is directing his horse to go away from the scene, because he was going down the stairs and almost out of the painting. Even the horse knew better than to look at the sky, unlike the dog, he was looking down at the floor too knowing as well that that is where he belongs too.
Overall, after looking at this painting for so long, from my point of view, I see that this painting is cut in half: the half where icarus had been hushed and infected all his surroundings as well as the artist tried to make us have a clear idea of this because the shadings of his colours on the side of icarus was darker, and the shade and colours on the other sides where nature was doing what it is supposed to be doing, the shades, were lighter, normal, and happier. The second side was going on with its normal life and paying attention to what they are supposed to do. The second thing that I saw in my point of view and I know that I have said it earlier, is that most of the painting is an imagery of death, warnings, and creatures that were accepting and knew they had to accept the reality they are in and what they are created to do in this world.
The image, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by Bruegel Pieter, is an oil painting created from the myth Daedalus and Icarus. Bruegel paints the scene in which the sea hushed Icarus forever, from the men looking up, Icarus’ legs kicking in the sea, and Crete in the corner. The scene which is being painted is the climax to the myth in which Icarus, in full flight, soars into the sky melting the wax that holds the fastened wings together. Icarus falls into the sea, which in turn claims his life, while Daedalus is nowhere to be seen. In the corner of the painting, to the left, in the area I suppose is Crete, a bird like figure flies off not knowing what has happened.
My eye looks to the top left corner, and image that takes on third of the total painting. I large town or city in which I suppose is Crete, is guarded by ships and mountains surround the area in all its entirety. It stops escape from land or sea, a large building surrounded by green stands in a burnt orange color, larger than the other buildings. This is where Daedalus and Icarus were staying, and this is where they said there last goodbyes. Originally I thought an island to the right of Crete was Crete itself since it is surrounded by water. Upon further inspection I came to the conclusion that the island cannot be Crete due to its lack of buildings. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and comparing sizes of the other lands and ships against it, the center island is much too small. The large island does indeed have mountains on it; Mt. Psiloreitis is the islands highest point. Daedalus blocked by mountains and the king of Crete, who rules the seas passage way, can only think of a way to fly. Daedalus, who is not seen in the painting, fashions wings and fastens them on Icarus, kisses him and Icarus then dies.
Icarus also caught my eye, flailing in the right corner his legs in the air, he takes barely any room. He is hard to see and when it caught my eye I thought it was a fish or something. Icarus’ legs create small waves but goes unnoticed by the fisherman who sits idly by who could if he saw swim out and save him. Although the detail of where Icarus landed, and where the workers are, are not specified by the writer of the myth. The painter seems to show that no one would help poor Icarus as he flails about. In the corner left of the paining a black bird like thing flies, could it be Daedalus searching or leaving? I’ve looked through the painting in search of the partridge that was mentioned in the story but could not find him. Which is not very surprising since the painting is not at that part of the story. I also looked for any sign of a god like figure that may have been hiding in the painting, I did find a lizard like thing in the water near Icarus as he drowned, maybe the painters idea of a god? This might be just what I see, looking closer it could be a branch and the colors make it look like a lizard.
Underneath the island of Crete stands a prison like structure, a dark and stone monument, surrounded completely by water. It might not be a prison maybe a temple, one of the ones described that Daedalus and Icarus flew high over. This might be where to God’s looked out and saw the pair and too punish Daedalus, struck down his son. Back long ago people believed that if your child was struck with illness and accident you had done something to anger the gods. I look more now attracted to the shepherded in the field and noticed two black sheep, a representation of Daedalus and Icarus I presume. They are far from each other but facing the same direction. The direction of the wind brings another theory to mind, that they went in a circle but intend to go the other side of the mountain of Crete. I look at the Sheppard again seeing his eyes; they look high possibly insisting that Daedalus is off the painting. Why would the painter not draw the father?
I keep looking at the painting like an accident recreationist trying to think of where they came from. The wind suggest that they were going toward the island I named Crete, The mountain in the background suggest that, that is Crete. Then there is the fact that the island I named Crete is Crete due to the block by Land and water. I look and see Icarus again, I feel bad, I see his feet kicking and I look at the direction they are facing to the right side. If he fell in flight and twisted down then he was flying toward the left side, toward Crete. I still hold that the island is Crete by its intricate display and impossibility or escape by land or sea.
The painting “Landscape in the fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel seems to hold many clues, the wind, the ships, and the land masses. The whole painting can be studied and examined, thrown into theories by many scientists and still no one person will really agree. Even if it is just a small fact on what a branch may be. There are so many symbols that can all contradict each other but also work with each other. What we need is a professional in Greek mythology, one in Geography, and one in forensic science. Then we might be able to piece what’s what. How things happened where and why things are they way they are and why the painter did what he did. Why did he describe this part of the story the way he did? I have voiced all the opinions I can think of in as great detail as I can.
The painting, “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”, done by Pieter Brugel, shows a sunset scenery with a shepherd gathering a herd of sheep. Also, a woman with a plow machine attached on a horse is most likely gathering crops on a field. A fisherman is near the end of the land, fishing for fish. Also, many ships are on the water, traveling to other places. The land to the top left corner of the painting resembles Crete, which a land like prison for captives being guarded and surrounded by mountains. Also, there is a dead body on the bottom right corner, who is most likely Icarus. Also, there is a beautiful sun in the sky to represent the beauty of nature within this landscape.
The first part in the painting that I set my eyes on was the shepherd herding the sheep. Next, I set my eyes on the lady with a toy-looking horse that she is riding on. I reckoned that she is working on a crop field to get ready for its growing season. Next, I saw a big area of land that looks like a city surrounded by mountains. I realize that the land with the surrounded mountains is the land of Crete because Icarus and Daedalus were exiled to the land of Crete, being guarded by Minos and his minions, which surrounding rocks. Next, I saw a fisherman fishing for fish, and see a dead body lying in the ocean with wings on its back. He is making an attempt to get the body back to shore. The dead body is what I focused my eyes on next. I know that the dead body is Icarus because he died from the crashing waters while is flying with his wings made out of wax. Next, I witnessed ships on the water, which they are most likely used for traveling from land to land. They most likely witnessed the dead body in the water after the incident in which Icarus flew with his waxed wings and gets pulled in by the waters. I also focused on the sunset because it describes when many of these incidents took place.
The title of the painting, “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”, has a relation to the painting itself. The term for “landscape” shows in the painting a sunset landscape with a big scenery of water with ships, and land being surrounded with people, buildings, and fields. The terms, “The Fall of Icarus”, plays a major role within this painting because in the painting, there is a dead body within the water with wings on its back. This resembles Icarus because he died by the crushing waters with an attempt of escaping the land of exile, Crete. He flew with wings that were made out of wax, trying to escape Crete, but died in the end. Also, the workers in the landscape contribute to the fall of Icarus because they are the ones who witnessed Icarus in the sky and see him tumble into the water. However, the one who mostly witnessed this incident occur was his father, Daedalus, because he was watching him fly into the sky and see him crash into tormenting waters. This matches the title really well since the painting shows the death of Icarus in a beautiful landscape.
Many interrelationships occur within this landscape that relates to the title. For example, the people who are working, the fisherman, shepherd, and the plowman, are all somewhat looking up into the sky to see in amazement of exactly what happens. The land on the top left corner of the landscape represents Crete, a place where Icarus was held on exile and escapes from there using hand-made wax. Icarus flew from Crete to the sky, causing amazement by the workers until he tumbles down into water and dies. The person who told him to escape from Crete was Daedalus, his father, and is blamed for this incident. However, it seems somewhat of a benefit to him because Daedalus was pretty jealous of his son for Icarus’s idea of flying away from Crete towards survival. Daedalus thought that his son was smarter than him, which to most families, is somewhat of a humiliation. Therefore, he seeks happiness in his inner feelings for his son’s death while on the outside, he feels sad for losing his son. These interrelationships represent towards how to develop a well-thought out thesis for any neither explication nor essay.
Therefore, my conclusion for this landscape by Pieter Brugel is that he wanted to pinpoint the death of Icarus into a much more depth description through a painting. He uses the workers as witnesses to Icarus’s fall and the land with mountains on the top left corner of the painting to pinpoint where he was at that time. The sunset also represents the duration of which the event that took place, which is of course Icarus’s death. Also, the ships represent part of the witnesses as well since they are circling around the water in which Icarus is next to them. Also, the thought of Daedalus’s involvement with Icarus’s death is part of my conclusion as well since his feelings of wanting Icarus to die represent the title as well. Also, the exile that they were both taking part of in Crete sparked their thoughts for escaping to go back to their home. However, Minos, the leader of Crete, did not allow that to happen and used the mountains and his dominions as his guardians of his land. Therefore, in order, Icarus thought of the idea of escaping from Crete. Daedalus wanted him to go back home and witnesses him flying into the sky. The workers and passengers in the ship are all watching in amazement until they see until crash into the water, seeing him dead. My conclusion is that the death of Icarus is mostly blamed on Daedalus for allowing this incident to happen, and he was witnessing this event for the whole time.
In the image, a person can see several islands, the ocean, ships, people, animals, and a city. The fist things my eye notices, is the sunset. I noticed that Pieter Bruegel uses mostly yellow with only a little bit of orange and red. The sunset is in about a third of the way down from the top of the painting and is set towards the right. You can see the sunset on the horizon. It only brightens some but not the entire skyline. To me it seems as if the sun is shining light only on the scene of Icarus’ fall. Another thing I noticed was the reflection of the sunset in the water. Normally when the sun reflects off the ocean the brightness is pretty intense, but in the painting, the reflection is dull and barely noticeable. Bruegel may have done this to make sure that the viewer’s focus didn’t remain on the sunset, but instead gave light to the scene. Pieter Bruegel also used the sunset as a symbol. The sunset is falling to the horizon, which, almost looks like it is falling into the water. The sun falling in some cultures represents the death of a god and its fall from grace. This is a lot like Icarus because Icarus is flying high in the sky. In "Daedalus and Icarus", the ploughman, sheep herder, and fisherman look up into the sky and see Deadalus and Icarus flying high in the sky and say, "They must be gods." Thus, Icarus' plunge to the water is like the death of a god as the sun sets.
The next aspect of the painting that caught my eye was the ploughman at the bottom of the painting. He is big in size and is wearing a red shirt with a gray over garment. I think the ploughman is wearing a brown hat on his head. It appears as if the ploughman is wearing white shorts with brown pants underneath and black shoes. The ploughman is looking forwards and paying attention to his work and nothing around him. The ground he is standing on is partially green and grassy while the other part has ripples. The ripples almost look like steps, but at the same time the ripples remind me of the ocean and how when something falls or moves in the water, the movement causes a ripple-effect. The plough that the ploughman is using is being pulled by a brown horse and the plough is cutting deep into the earth. The light from the sunset shines on the ploughman and starts to fade around him.
Another part of the painting that stuck out was the sheep herder. He is much smaller than the ploughman is. Even though it looks like the ploughman and the sheep herder aren’t too far apart, the size makes it seem as if the sheep herder was on a lower level. The sheep herder is wearing a blue shirt, has a dark pair of pants on, and has sometime of backpack on his back. He is looking up into the sky as if something out of the ordinary was flying overhead. Next to the herder, there is a dog sitting. The dog appears to be looking straight ahead. The sheep that the herder is tending to are mostly white. Among the white sheep, there are two gray or black sheep.
The next thing that catches my attention is located in the lower right-hand corner of the painting. In the corner there is what may be a fisherman. Not too far ahead of the fisherman in the water there is a pair of legs sticking out of the water. The legs look as if they are thrashing in the water. There are feathers that are falling near the legs also. The fisherman appears to be oblivious to the fact that someone fell into the water only feet away. The fisherman is wearing a white shirt with some type of smock over it and a hat. Bruegel made the fisherman small and bent over the water.
Finally, I notice the rest of the scenery. I could see the ocean, the islands, the mountains, the city, to the left of the painting, and even some birds flying high in the sky. The birds are so small and black it's almost impossible to see them in the darkening sky. I believe that the island with the city being noticable is Crete. Bruegel would have made the features of Crete distinct to give the viewers more of an idea as to what it relates to. In "Daedalus and Icarus", Daedalus creates the wings for him and his son, Icarus, so that they can escape Crete and get back to Athens. Another island that's has features that are noticeable is a small island that has only one gray, stone building and some trees. Pieter Bruegel may have made these features more noticeable because he wanted to emphasize the idea of islands being like prisons that keep you locked in. This relates to the poem by Ovid because when Daedalus wanted to get away, he thought of Crete as a prison that's inescapable by land or sea. The birds flying just add to the scenery and at the same time represent something else. The birds are a part of nature that the gods created to fly. Daedalus made the wings in an attempt to defy the gods and fly away from Crete. Also, Daedalus got the idea of creating wings by looking into the sky and realizing he could get free and modeled the wings after those of a bird's.
The title of the painting, "The Fall of Icarus", relates a lot to the painting. This title relate to the painting because as I noticed in the painting, there are legs flailing in the water and there are feathers falling nearby. I am assuming that the legs are part of Icarus who fell into the water to his death.
Pieter Bruegel made this oil painting over 100 years after Ovid wrote "Daedalus and Icarus". He painted this as an interpretation of what happened in the poem. Therefore, "The Fall of Icarus" depicts Icarus' death. Bruegel uses his colors, the sunset, and the obvious aspects (Icarus in the water with his legs flailing and feathers falling) to show this and get the overall idea of what happened across to the viewer.
In this painting called Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, by Bruegel, Peter, there are many actions and objects that have some meaning connected to the story Daedalus and Icarus. There is a horse being used by farmer to turn the grass to soil by using a tool. There is a shepherd resting on his staff looking up at the sky in awe. Beside him is a dog with sheep scattered around them. Left in the picture there are rocks that stick out of the water like a castle. To the right in the picture there is a man fishing. In front of him there are feathers falling in the water. The feathers came from the person whose legs are sticking out of the water. In the middle of the picture is the bright sun which brightens up the painting. Scattered on the sea are boats of different sizes. There is city to the left in the painting and behind that there are mountains. Where the legs, as mentioned before, are sticking out of the water it is dull and dark. The branches farthest to the right look dead.
When I looked at this painting I firs noticed the sun because it is bright and in the center of the painting. My eyes then went to the to the man with the horse because of his bright red shirt. The ground below him looked like steps at first. I then noticed the shepherd because in a way he stuck out next to the farmer. The closest boat in the painting popped out too because of its sail which is almost like a net grabbing you attention. This lead me to the fisherman. Two stick like objects sticking out of the water caught my eye. At first I wasn’t sure what they were. But I took a second look and saw it was legs. Above the legs feathers are falling into the water. There are rocks stick out of the water. I’m still not sure if they’re just rocks or a building structure. The sun, clouds, and mountains make the painting look like a room.
The title of this painting is “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus The painting is a landscape. It shows that Icarus has fallen into the sea. Feathers are falling behind him. A shepherd is staring at the sky in awe where Icarus was flying with his father. The whole scene describes the title, from the land to Icarus’ legs sticking out of the water. The painting is like a time zone map. The shepherd looking at the sky is when Icarus was flying with his father. After when his legs are sticking out of the water is the time he fell. When I hear the word fall I think of gloominess and darkness. The part of the sea where Icarus fell is dark and gloomy. The words fall and darkness can also be related to death. Fall can also mean a lowering in power.
This painting shows the land and people Icarus and his father Daedalous are flying over to escape Minos’ land. The sun in the middle of the painting is bright so you get the idea of how hot it was when Icarus flew too high. The place where Icarus has fallen is where the sunlight ends. Its as if Icarus is at tow places at once. The title fits the painting perfectly because that’s exactly what it is. The painting shows everything that was happening during Icarus’ fall and the location being flown over. Icarus’ fell in the dark corner of the painting. This is the opposite of the sun which is bright and in the center of the painting. Usually light stands for life and darkness stands for death. It is like Icarus’ is exiting the world by falling in a dark corner. Usually when people look at a picture the object in the middle is the most important. Icarus’ was treated unimportant in the story. His father risked his son’s life to escape Minos’ land and go back home. The sea god “hushed Icarus”.
The painting “Landscape with the fall of Icarus” by Bruegel, Peter describes a scene in the story Daedalous and Icarus. It is the scene where Icarus falls from the sky and drowns in the sea. The painting also shows the land being flown over by Daedalous and Icarus. The picture describes so many subjects from the story. They just need to be found. From top to bottom this painting is full of words and symbols.
In this art piece from Bruegel, Pieter Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. When I saw the three workers I thought back into the readings we did in class. They were the three people who looked up at the same time while they were doing their work and saw Icarus falling down from the sky. All three of the workers thought it was a god. But in the picture only one of the workers are looking up at the sky and everyone else is just doing their work. I see a village and that village could be probably the place where Daedalus and Icarus live. I see the mountains so maybe that is where Daedalus and Icarus are coming from. Looking at the picture makes me think that the people that are working on the landscape and they didn’t care about Icarus when he just fell down from the sky. Daedalus also warned Icarus that if he didn’t fly mid way he would be In the suns heat, and it will burn the wax off the wings but Icarus had to much fun and went higher which caused his death. The trees on top of the mountain looks more dead than the trees near the sheep’s because there are less leaves on top and more leaves on the bottom. The three workers probably knew that Icarus fell from the sky but they didn’t care. One is plowing away on the fields with his horse that is connected to a some what of a connector. It looks like he’s not enjoying his day. Near, the bottom left. The other one is a Shepard on the right side of the 1st guy and he has lots of sheep’s with him and the sheep’s didn’t even get startled by Icarus’ fall, I think he’s the only one who saw Icarus falling down from the sky and lands into the dark blue side of the ocean, wonder why he doesn’t say anything to anyone I‘m guessing that he doesn‘t care about Icarus either. But he is probably still looking up because Daedalus is still up there, Daedalus and Icarus was exiled to the island of Crete by king of Minos. But how did Icarus get his wax burned off his wings if the sun looks like its going down, seems like its almost evening so that confuses me. The last guy I see is on the bottom right corner of the picture and he is fishing for food. There are houses that look like it’s been man made by rocks in the water that is connected onto an island. The ship on the right side looks really close to Icarus and I wondered why they didn’t do anything. The wind looks pretty strong right now maybe they didn’t know because they are busy keeping the ship on course.
The key part in this painting that caught my eyes is the three workers because it looked like they were just minding their own business. Each of them were at a different spot in the picture doing different things. In the poem they said they saw two objects flying so they said they were gods. But even though they saw Icarus flying down into the water they didn’t do anything about it. After Icarus died they named the island Icarian. I’m thinking that the workers are up to early to work or just tired from working. All three of them are wearing different kind of color and their heads are in a different motion. I think the picture of the sun is important because Icarus just died and the sun is almost gone or the sun might be coming up. The clouds are also moving towards the sun and covering it. Or it might look like clouds but it could actually be other mountains in the area. Looks like theirs a lot of fish to catch because I see tons of fishes jumping out of the water. Unless it was just Icarus falling from the sky making the big splash. The guy who is fishing looks like he’s having a rough time catching fishes but still he doesn’t care that Icarus is in front of him drowning. To me it looks like their on a mountain themselves because on to far bottom left corner there is like a little down hill look. So I’m guessing it’s a mountain where they red shirt guy is from what I see. So all the three people. Near the village I see a couple of birds flying around so I’m wondering if its that partridge that was flying around during the funeral.
Now I’m seeing the scenery and how its looks like it was a nice day. Turning into rough night or the sun is coming out. the sun could be taking out the dark black clouds away. Or the clouds are taking over the suns light. But looks like its going to rain at night probably because the clouds are dark. Maybe that’s why the guy in blue is looking up, it could rain anytime soon. I see like a couple of birds flying around. There flying around but not so high where the sun will hurt them, or not to low where they get sucked into the sea. Possibly the king of Minos, Crete made sure they wouldn’t escape by closing out everything besides the sky. Maybe he knew that the only way is to fly out and the sun would do something to the wings. So I’m thinking that the three people in the painting doesn’t care because they have their own task to do.
This whole art piece I think that the artist is showing us that when you go against the gods back then you will be punished. In this painting the sun is coming out or going down to show us how he died, where he died, and the time that he died. At the end no one cared for Icarus and the continued their everyday job as people.
The painting is a great piece of artwork which, to me, shows how the artist himself relates to the whole story of Daedalus and Icarus. The artist includes a shepherd within the painting with a back round of something similar to the island of Crete. The fore ground image shows the present times of those days, which is much civilized and they are more up to date on the area. The back round image shows distant islands and the sun as a focus point, such as a camera taking pictures. You would most definitely look at the sun rather than the empty waters which are in a similar shade with no depth shown. So far the sun is most bright in the painting which makes it stick out the most, to me.
Many parts of the painting includes the many details added in the fore ground of the image, while the back round contains a blank body of water with small islands in several random places. What I noticed in the painting were the birds, they kind of caught my eye, because all u see is a line that is in the shape of a bird flying. But there is not just one, there’s two of them flying. As you look closely you would see that one is flying low and the other is flying high. There’s another point I would like to add, if you look at the position of the birds you notice one is flying towards the land and one is drifting off higher. In my opinion the Bird that is flying away is Icarus, because he is flying away and towards the sky. In other words the author probably interpreted the sky as heaven, and the fore ground land as the place that Daedalus planned to escape to from Crete.
Another section of the painting that I observed was that there is something in the water that I can’t entirely describe or understand one hundred percent on. In the lower right corner is seems as if there is someone drowning in the water, and it looks like legs in the air as if the person fell face first into the water. Then there are like little ripples around the area, but in my opinion they are not ripples, but they are feathers. I say this because around the whole mass of water there are no waves or water ripples around until you get to the person whom I think is drowning. Another part of this section is branches, but I think I see a bird as well, sitting on the branch and looking down on the person who drowned.
The title is a big explanation, “Landscape with the fall of Icarus.” If you separate the words you get a better understanding of what I meant in the painting. The painting is surely of a landscape of a body of water and several masses of land. Then it includes with the fall of Icarus, which means it had to show the fall of Icarus and that the many images that I describe must be some of them. Well I’ve concluded that writing goes from left to right, and that sequences of events fall left to right. So the birds are when they flew out and the drowning section shows the ending for him. What I noticed is the person watching the drowning of the person and the bird that falls into the section of the painting also symbolizes Icarus.
Another part of the painting is the people in there, the two men in the painting are holding rods or sticks of some sort, which could symbolize something. Like how the person in blue holds his stick down and looking up at the same time, can symbolize that he has let go of the stick and has given up on working. This person can stand for Icarus. The person in the fore ground is holding the stick but more like addressing the horse, or showing it what to do, like an instructor at school, back in the days. Note the color of each person too. The person who I describe as Icarus is blue, meaning he is like the sea, or has fallen into the sea and blended in and where the sea is calm and slow. The person in the fore ground is red because he is basically flying still with the sun casting on him.
Then I notice with the placement of the characters. The scenery fades as it goes back, and the closer the clearer then far. Such as the person in blue, he would eventually if this painting were to continue, while the person in red is all the way in the front, bright and noticeable. Another placement in the paintings is the ships. If you notice the 2 ships to the left are fine, it looks as if the small ship is following the big ship, but then if you look at the right side only the big ship is left over. Then I noticed that in the middle right below the sun is a small ship all by itself. But it is much closer to the sun, even though the big one to the right is far away. This gives me the idea that the smaller ship got lost from the bigger ship. It shows that the bigger ship is Daedalus and the smaller ship is Icarus.
The last thing that probably isn’t much noticeable is the clothing that the two people wear, the one that is to the fore ground, that I compared to as Daedalus, has some sort of skirt, which reminda me of wings. Then the other person in blue, as I compared to Icarus, has no skirt attached so there fore it’s like he basically lost his wings. Then the way the two characters are looking. The red person looks down, as he is disappointed, and the blue person looks up, as if he needed help doing his job.
The painting done by Pieter Bruegel, named Landscape with the Fall of Icarus This is an oil painting created from the myth Daedalus and Icarus. It shows the scene, which is after Icarus meets his end and because he didnt heed his fathers advice, which is his father told him, Dont go too low, or water will weigh the wings down; Dont go too high, or the suns fire will burn them. Keep to the middle way. And one more thing, no fancy steering by star or constellation, follow my lead! So, when Icarus was to fly for the first time, he flew to the heaven, and flew to close to the Helios (the sun god), then, downfall into the sea. Also, now in the canvas there are many things going on in this picture. There is a dead body on the bottom right corner that a man looks like Icarus. At first time, when I saw his legs above in the water, I think there is some fish in there. After I look round, I observation there is not fish, that is Icaruss legs. But that is not what caught my eye when I first looked at the Painting.
What caught my eyes when I first looked at the Painting was the ploughman on the handles of the ploughshare and with a plow machine attached on a horse is a most likely gathering crop on a field or most likely starting made some steps on a field, to help himself easy to do his job on the field. Why is it caught my eyes when I first looked at the Painting, I think because it is the front and close to me, so, when I first looked at the Painting. Next, I set my eyes on was the shepherd herding the sheep, and rests his weight upon his crook, look up, at those air-borne above. Then, I set eyes to the fish man is near the end of the land, fishing to fish.
The land, that is on the bottom left in the picture. Then, I set eyes to Icarus, and I see many ships are on the water, traveling to other places. Then, I follow the natural progress, I see few hills with trees on the water, and I think that is an island on the water. In succession, I see a big area of land that has mountain surrounded the Crete, which is the land like prison place for captives being guarded. That has some orange and pink color building. Also, I realize that place is Crete because Daedalus and Icarus were exiled to the city called Crete, being work for Minos like minion, which surrounding rocks. And Daedalus kissed and said last goodbye to Icarus. Also, I see the large black bird is flying around between the mountain and Crete, it looks like it is looking for something, so, I think he is Daedalus, he is looking for Icarus, he keep yelling and calling Icarus, Icarus, where are you? Where can I find you? Icarus, Icarus but Icarus cant answer him, after Icarus downfall into the sea, and kicking in the sea, he cant call out his father any more, because he already die in the sea. When I see his feet kicking in the sea, I feed so bad, why, because the one is sitting near the end of the land, fishing to fish, the fish man, he could jump down into the sea to rescue Icarus, but he didnt did that. He still is sitting there to fishing to fish. Also, at that time, Daedalus still didnt find Icarus and the fish man didnt rescue him, so he die in the sea. That made a tragedy of Icarus. If the fish man jump down into the water to rescue Icarus, then he can safe Icarus. Anyways. Then I set my eyes to the sea. The colors of blue, black. It looks so sad. When I see the large sea, what I first feel is sad, I feel sad because the color and Icarus. Although there have sunshine, I still feel its sad. When I look back to the shepherd rests his weight upon his crook, his sheep are lentando leave him away, to find some grass to eat. When I see these three people, they just doing their job, they didnt really care what happen around them. The ploughman continues on the handles of the ploughshare and with a plow machine attached on a horse, working on a field; the shepherd rests his weight upon his crook; the fish man still fishing to fish near the end of the land.
The title of the Painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, has a relation to the painting itself is describe Icarus fallen down to the sea, the major role of this painting is Icarus, the one who is downfall into the sea, he flew with his wings that were made out of wax, trying to escape Crete, and everything during Icarus fallen down to the sea, and Daedalus is looking for Icarus. And the landscape shows in the painting a sunset, sad lanscape with a big scenery of the sea with few ships, and land surrounded with people, trees, island, and buildens, fields. So, many interrelationships occur within this lanscape that relates to the title. In fact, this paining is also interrelationship with our life. For example, like the people who are ploughman are working on the field, the fish man is fishing to fish, the shepherd gathering a herd of sheep. Everybody is busy in their works, are trying hard to work for their life, to survival in this world. If you somewhat looking up the top left, you can see a big area of the land, it looks like a city surrounded by a large mountain, the city is called Crete, which is that Daedalus and Icarus wanted to escape place. He wants Icarus has freedom, and against the king of Crete, Minos. In the painting, that is the only one place draw like a city, and surrounded by the mountain, and Daedalus is flying in the sky to looking for Icarus. But Icarus still didnt has freedom, on the contrary, he die by fallen down to the sea. So, in our life, mostly thing or people are like Daedalus and Icarus, they try to survival in the world, so they try to do their best or try to escape the place what they wont to stay. But not everybodys wished to come true. On the contrary, maybe they will fail they wish. So, my conclusion for this painting, Landscape with the Fall of Icarus by Pieter Brugel is that he wanted to attest the death of Icarus into more depth description through this painting to description our life.
The first thing I noticed in the photo that caught my eyes was the workers and how the small pieces of land was surrounded by water. It looks as if they have a little farm going because as you can see there are many animals on the land. Also on the right of the page the ship that is there, there is a human body that looks as if it is drowning in the water. I also observed the worker down on the land with the sheep, it seems as if he is hiking or climbing up mountains. I made this inference because he has a large backpack on with a climbing pole looking up towards the mountains. The guy at the top of the page looks like he is letting the horse down the steps toward the sheep. The guy at the bottom right hand corner of the page to me is the fisherman in “deadalus and icarus”. He is sitting down on the rock leaning into the water as if he caught a fish. It also looks very dark were the workers are working. But as you l ook out in the picture towards and past the water it is much brighter. I notice the sun at the top of the page going down like day is ending and night is beginning. There is also a village or small city at the top left of the page that really struck me as odd. This can be the city or village that the workers live at. There are also many ships sitting in the water I wondered if these were the ways of transportation of the workers and people of the village. There seems to be a little cave in the left side of the page in the water. It shows the opening of the rock, and you can see how far the rock goes down in the water. The water has a light tint to it in the middle of the picture so you can see the depth a little bit. I don’t understand why the Sheppard has all the animals congested on one small piece of land. It seems as if he is waiting for something or doing something important. The picture also shows a lot of pieces of land and islands. As I observed the picture longer I noticed who the so called workers in the picture were. The guy at the top of the page with the horse is the plower. As I already found out the guy with all the sheep is the Sheppard. At the bottom right of the picture is the fisherman as I said. A little in front of him in the water is Icarus, who I thought was a guy drowning. So as I observe I notice and analyze many things some which may be pretty obvious. It kind of looks like there at a quary. As rock surrounds the water on all sides. Even if you look straight ahead you can see some sort of mountain in the fog. The title “Landscape with the fall of Icarus” is pretty relevant to this picture. Just the word landscape in general describes a lot. Because you see many different types of landscape in this picture. You have rocky, flat, bumpy, water, high and low elevation, etc. The fall of Icarus is pretty obvious too. You see Icarus in the water in the lower right corner of the page in front of the fisherman, with the ship behind him. Beca use from reading the short story of “Daedalus and Icarus” you’ll come to find out the Icarus did fall off of the ship. So this is what I thought the picture brought to the title "Landscape with the fall of Icarus". But from looking at the picture in general I noticed a dark side and a light side. The darker side is the side that Icarus is on when he fell off of the ship. The side where the village and community is at, is where the bright side of the picture is. I think the painter made this clear to see for whoever observed this photo. Also a big point in this picture I had saw was the birds. If you look at them well you'll see that they are flying pretty low, which is mentioned several times in the poem. I feel that the artist made it a point to see that the birds were flying at a low altitude. So my conclusion for the ''landscape with the fall of Icarus" by Pieter Bruegel is that it brings many clues and interesting points. For example the dark and light side of the picture, the landscape, and the ships. I think that Pieter Bruegel breaks this painting down into certain sections and aspects and I feel he does a real great job of doing it. For Pieter Bruegel to do this oil painting one hundread years after the poem was writen is pretty impressing. Also for him to analyze and break it down so clear is a very good job. Another thing I feel Pieter Bruegel wanted to express and pinpoint was the death and fall of Icarus in the bottom right corner of the painting along with the dark and light parts of the landscape. By saying this, the title comes to mind "Landscape with the fall of Icarus". So in general Pieter Bruegel did a great job with this antique oil painting. I feel if someone who never even read the poem would be able to analyze and understand this painting a bit. Because I didnt understand this poem one hundread percent and i've read it several times. But by seeing the painting and observing it, it brings many different thoughts and ideas to my head. But in seems that the three workers in the painting are only worried about the tasks there doing and nothing else. They dont seem to know what is going on around them like Icarus in the water, the fisherman, and all the ships in the water. But finally I'd have to say that the birds flying may be the most obvious that Pieter Bruegel is expressing. He show thats the birds are flying low and close to the water which is mentioned several times in the poem. This is what I've analyzed and observed from looking at the ancient oil painting by Pieter Bruegel. Also this is my conclusion that brings all the facts, clues, and ideas together that Pieter Bruegel shows and suggests in his oil painting.
The painting is a detailed picture looking out at a bay horizon. With a noticeable close by man in the front and and distant cities and boats. Seems to be spring time.
Starting from the top right corner we have lots of aqua greenish blue sky blending into the mountains. You can see the triangular mountains outline but the inner colors blend in very nicely. The mountain consist of 3 visible tops. The left is pointy, center is the highest and the last top is very flat and smooth a little lower then the left top. As you move towards the left of the corner the bright yellow and white colors of the sun begin to blend into the bluish. Towards the south of the mountains which are distant and along the horizon, you can see the shore line of the mountains. The shore line has a white shoreline and there are 2 white waves in between the dark bluish water. Right of the shoreline there appears to be a small island, or heavy reflection of the son on the water above. There seems to be a few bushes on the right side of the island and it also is right under the sunshine, divided by the horizon of the dark water. As you move to the horizon, towards the left there is a very Yellow, dark yellow spot which seems to be a mini sun. and a reflection of it on the horizon. Moving more to the west of the horizon you see a very distant triangular mountain or object, the colors are very similar to the yellow and aqua around the sun. back to the east edge of the painting, continuing down from the shoreline there is another island closer to the main land. There is a good amount of dark greenish bushes and vegetation. There is a sand shore line beige color with a rock towards the left edge of the island. The right side of the island is covered by the edge of the painting. Moving south the water begins to darken significantly into a very dark aqua mix with no white waves. Half way down there’s a 1800 medieval ship. Dark wood with 2 sails open. The front and back, with center sails rolled up. There appears to be a whitish flag with red circular symbol on the top of the ship. The back of the ship is facing the right edge of the painting. Back to the right edge it darkens to a aqua black downwards until it reaches a close by shoreline. The shoreline dramatically changes the color from dark to a shallow whitish aqua. Greens and blues. There’s a man standing on the shore line, hiding his front facing the sea. The mans right arm is reaching towards the ocean. Half of the arm appears to be disappearing. The man appears to be wearing a dark gray/black helmet with a red neck guard down to his beige robe. The mans left arm is tugged to the front of his body. The man has a black noticeable belt. To the left of the man we come to some trees with very few leaves. The trees arms are very blackened and not noticeable and blend around with the rising hill. The grass is also very dark blackish green, as you continue to the left you will see the colors dramatically change from dark to a reflection bright greens and yellows. We run into man plowing the ground. the man appears to be wearing a dark helmet and a beige top. A skirt with 7 visible folds. The face of the man is hidden and he has a neck guard like the other man but his hair is visible unlike the other one. Brown stockings and black shoes. This all happens towards the bottom center of the painting moving up. We see a explore hugging a Shepard stick wearing blueish shirt, greenish dark pants and boots with a dog aside him, dark and furry. Both faces of the dog and the man can be seen reflected. Lots of sheep surrounding him. heading over the cliff we go back to the ocean with the aqua and blueish sea. Upward we have another 2 midieval ships similar to the first one. And towards the top we end up at the horizon and the triangular figure. So far that’s the right half of the painting. Back to the top towards the triangular figure, we have a very populated island to the left under the horizon. There appears to be a lot of desert like buildings, beige and redish colors, very bright with a few visable dark windows. Towards the right of the population we run into beige mountains, very visable, all and volumous. At the left edge of the painting we run into another dark tree with a lot more leaves the the previous tree. There are more trees and vegetation all dark with more and more leaves towards the bottom. Half way down the page we see the plowed land, beige and dark sandy colors. There is a horse guiding the mans plow we described earlier. The horse is a very dark brown with his face away from the viewer. There appears to be a greenish aqua thin saddle on it. Towards the bottom right edge we see a very dark bush enrolled on a high dark grass hill.
The painting as a whole seems a little complex. It looks as thuogh there’s a lot going on, a couple of characters and there are also many colors and many different parts. When I first laid my eyes on Landscape with the Fall of Icarus the first thing I noticed in the painting was the small rock island towards the left of the water. For some reason this rock island really stood out for me, it’s just different from the other objects that appear in the painting. It’s so much darker then the rocks beside it which are white, the color gives a nice contrast to its surroundings. Also, as I looked more closely I noticed what appeared to be a small entrance. It got me wondering as to why would Bruegal place a rock island there and also what could be inside that rock but then I shook these thoughts out of my mind and moved on to the next part of the painting. My eyes quickly jumped to the white rocks and the city which looked so peaceful. The city has different shades of light pink, blue, green and white. I could also see what I think is a temple, maybe it’s the temple of Minerva but there’s no way of knowing. What I also noticed were two black birds that look like they’re flying towards the city. Black birds always put give me an eerie feeling. Black birds remind me of death probably because of a dream I had when I was around ten. My dream was completely black and white and I was in some sort of island where there were hundreds and thousands of souls which had been reincarnated into these black birds. I guess in a way this dream of mine is similar to the poem because Perdix was reincarnated into a bird after he died. Even though the city is made up of light shades it seems as though there’s a shadow over it. The sky over it is a little darker. Now I’m noticing the plowman, its weird how I hadn’t really paid attention to him before even though he seems to jump out of the painting. I thought that he’d be looking up, "Some ploughman on the handles of the ploughshare, and all look up, in absolute amazement"(lines 22-23). He’s wearing a light tunic and a red sweater underneath it. The horse is dark brown. I can’t tell if the greenish part of the ground is grass or if its just mossy. The ground has a brownish tint to it and there are also some steps going down. More to the left there’s a tree and some more steps. In this part of the painting it’s a lot darker. The tree and its leaves are dark, but in contrast I can see some white flowers. The tree is also oddly shaped. Then I also noticed a Shepard with a flock of sheep. The Shepard is looking up at the sky, probably noticing Daedulus and Icarus. There is a dock with a muzzle beside him. Actually after I looked a little closer I noticed that the sheep don’t actually look like sheep, they kinda look like goats. Yeah, they’re definitely not a flock of sheep. Also, I saw what seems to look like a grey wolf in the group of goats. The goats are all white with a yellow tone to their fur. The Shepard is wearing a blue shirt, olive pants and brown shoes and the dog beside him is brown and has white paws. Then I started to notice the ocean again and I noticed the two ships that are there. Both dark in color. The one farther away appears grey, I tried to see if I could spot someone in the ship but I couldn’t since its way too small. I started noticing the sky again, There’s a sunset and the sun is right in the middle and on the borderline of the ocean. The sun is also being reflected on the water. It has a yellowy orange color and its perfectly round on the top. As I look my eyes go up I start noticing the colors which are very pretty. The sky goes from a yellowy orange to pink to blueish green to bluish grey. Sunsets and the ocean are a great combination, if only the sunsets in Massachusetts were this pretty. Anyways, I then first noticed the white island near the sunset. I can also see what looks like a temple or a building, its just that when I think of Greece I think of a lot of temples spread everywhere. So maybe the "temple" is just a building. The white rocks to the side look like icebergs instead of stones. But there are obviously no icebergs in Greece, but they really do look like them. My eyes went back again to the ship that looks like its nearer. And I could spot a little speck of white in it which is probably a person who might’ve been looking up, well at least in my imagination he is. The ship reminded of me of the compass that perdix invented. It also reminded me of what happened to Icarus and how he had to die in order for his dad to learn a lesson. The I looked down at the ocean and noticed 2 legs pointing up. This is Icarus, head down in the water, probably dead by now. Its funny because everyone in the picture seems oblivious to it. The ploughman is just there, the Shepard is looking up, and the fishermen is just fishing. I think it’s interesting how Icarus is in the corner of the painting, almost hidden. The ocean in that part is darker then in the other parts. The title is pretty self explanatory. It’s about the fall of Icarus, Daedulus’s son. Who flew too close to the sun and so the wax on his wings melted. In conclusion, I believe that the painter wanted to show how Icarus’s fall only affected Daedulus and no one else. Icarus’s fall may be insignificant to others but it affected Daedulus the most.
My main idea about the oil painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus c. 1558 by Pieter Bruegel is that its trying to show what the earth looked like when the death of Icarus occurred. In the painting you see the three men who are just regular folks working on the land or working with nature. The first thing I see when looking at the painting is the sun. The sun’s brightness draws my attention because it sticks out because most of the colors in the top half are dull and the yellow is bright. The sun is surrounded by the blue green sea that seems faded along with the orange cream colors surrounding the sun. There is some yellow and in what appears to be a sunset but it is not as bright as the sun itself. It is important for the artist to put this much emphasis on the sun because it is what led to the downfall of Icarus. The sun lights up a quarter of the sky but then the blue which may be clouds starts to take over. The clouds seem to turn into mountains. The artist makes the sun reflect off the sea which could imply it is starting to get late in the day. In the painting the next thing that seems to stick out is the man wearing the bright red shirt underneath a apron looking dressing with either tights or stocking and a hat. He is plowing the land and using nature to help him survive or get what he needs. The man’s face is not visible but his clothes stick out and are very visible. The land underneath him looks like dried grass but away from him the grass starts to get greener. He keeps his head down while he works and he is starting to walk down steps that seem to be made of stone or that could possibly be soil. Near the plough man is the Shepherd. He catches my attention next. You can see his face and he looks on the older side. He has his arms folded and between them is a stick. The shepherds clothes seem to blend in more with the background but you can see he is wearing a light blue shirt with green pants tucked in boots and he has a bag on his back. Surrounding him are sheep that seem to be creating a shield around him from the water. One of the sheep sits right next to him almost like a loyal child. The sheep is darker from all the other ones. The sheep sits next to the shepherd while he is staring up at the sky. He seems to be looking for something in the sky. The trees are darker then should be. They almost look black. Next I see the fisherman. He’s in the far right corner with a white shirt on. He is sitting on what looks likes a rock and he is very close to the water. Off in the water a little away from him you see two legs extended into the water. There looks like there is some sort of struggle between the water and the person. Around the feet and legs are feathers that are scattered around. The water is splashing everywhere and I think the person is trying to kick their feet. Near him is a ship. The sails are getting blow towards the northwest. You can see little flags on the top of the sail boat. The sail boat is a dark brown with a little red on it. The sails are pale yellow/beige and are connected by very thin strings. The next thing I see is a stone house that looks like some sort of temple or place of worship. It’s surrounded in water and there is a little door or opening. It looks like an island and you can see a little land that’s not covered by the stone and in the back or the stone structure is some kind of plant life. The stone structure does not look purposely created. It looks like they have always just been that way. The water around it is greenish blue and in the water you can see stones sticking out. In the back left of the picture you see a little town. The town has a harbor which all the boats are sailing to. The houses look really small because they are next to huge rocks or mountains. I think they are mountains in the back and on the side of the town is huge rocks and stone.

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus is a painting painted by Pieter Bruegel. It was painted in 1558 on an oil canvas. The picture has many different details and includes many different types of scenery all in one. The picture includes land, water, mountains, and even a sky with a sunset.
When I first saw the painting my eyes were immediately drawn to the back top of the picture on the sunset. This part of the picture is very beautiful and includes the sun, clouds, trees, and mountains. It looks like in this part of the painting the sun is setting. The sun is located right above the water in a bright yellow color. Above the sun are a cluster of clouds that look yellow with a tint of orange from the sun. Around these clouds are normal white/gray clouds. Around the sun is a lighter color yellow that represents the last few rays from the sun as it sets. On the right side of the painting in the top right hand corner on the left side of the sun are mountains and trees. The trees are beneath the mountains and are a very pale green color. Above the trees are the mountains which are a dark grayish color. The trees and the mountains on this side do not take up much room and are not a very big part of the painting itself. To the left of the sun in the top left hand corner are more trees and mountains just like the ones on the right side of the painting on which I have already explained in detail.
On the left side of the painting below the sunset is small city. It is a cluster of buildings and houses. The houses and buildings area all different sizes, shapes and colors. Some are a pale oranges color, some look reddish and also yellow. In between the cluster is water and a ship. To the left of the small city are more mountains . These mountains are very big and light tan color. Next to these mountains in between the city on the right is black bird which may be a crow. The bird is midair with its wings spread flying.
When i looked at the painting again my eyes were immediately drawn to the water and everything in it. In the middle of the painting taking up a large porsion of the picture is the ocean. In this part of the picture rite in fron of the sunset is small island with some green trees and what looks like two buildings or houses. This island is tan because of all the sand . The island isn't very crowded so the sand is in plain view. In this part of the painting there are many sailboats. To the left of the island and right of the city there are about three sailboats. Each sailboat is small and looks like it is pointed toward the city sailing to it. The bottom of the painting is the biggest and the easiest to see. It is notr blurry at all and it is very easy to make out what everything is. This part of the picture is a close up land and people. There are two men. On the left bottom hand corner are trees that are very big and green with many leaves. At the bottom of the trees are steps. To the right of the steps is a man and a horse. The horse is big and brown with a very long tail that almost looks blonde. The horse is carrying something on its back it looks like a blanket that is spread out and something else that is rolled up at the top of his back. The horse also has straps on him because he is attached to something wooden with wheels. The horse is pulling this wooden tool. Behind this wooden tool is a man who looks like he may be pushing it. This man is tall with black hair a red shirt and an even longer shirt over that is gray. He has on brown pants/tights and dark brown shoes. In his hand is along painting stick which is probably used for the horse. The horse and man are walking on grass. To the left of the grass are stairs and next to them is more land and some small plants. To the right of the man and below him is more land that has another man and sheep on it. The man is small and is wearing a blue shirt. He also has on pants and shoes and is leaning against a long stick taller than him. This man is looking up at the sky and he has brown hair and pale skin. Around this man are about nineteen different colored sheep. Some are white and some are black, they are all different sizes. Next to the man sitting down mouth open and tongue hanging put is a small black and white dog. He is all black with a white face and two white front paws. Behind the man are a few small green trees.
To the right of the land in the bottom is more land with a guy who is sitting down right next to the water. He is small with a white shirt and looks like he is reaching into the water for something. In front of him is the water and a guy swimming in it. All you can see of this guy are his legs that are sticking out of the water. There is also a small turtle who looks like he is walking of the and into the water. Behind the man is a big ship with two big sails. The ship is brown and the sails are white. One sail is in the front and one in the back. The ship has many poles and is made out of wood. It also has many windows and is carrying crates on it.
This painting was painted in 1558 so the things i have described are very different from the way things are now. The clothes, people and boats look very different than how they look now. I explained everything in this picture the way I see it. I explained the colors and where each thing was located in a lot of detail. Unfortunately even with my detailed description you would have to see the a painting with your own eyes to get the full affect and understanding.
“Landscape with the fall of Icarus” by: Pieter Bruegel. The first thing that stands out to me in the painting is a man walking with his horse. He is wearing a red shirt with a grayish dress over the shirt. In his right hand he is holding a whip to send his horse in the right direction. In his left hand he is holding a carriage that is connected to the horse. He also has one foot in front of the other as if he is walking. His head is down and he’s wearing a black hat. He is wearing black flat shoes. He is more towards the left of the painting then right. His head is in the middle and his feet are almost to the very bottom of the painting His left foot is touching the first stair. His right foot is on the tip of his toes. The grass that he is standing on seems to be dead but the rest of the grass looks healthy. The horse that he is walking with is very skinny. The horse has something on his neck, looking like the man’s belongings. The horse looks to be smaller and skinner than the man. The horse is on the far left side of the painting. It looks like the man and the horse are going to be walking towards another set of stairs then up again. It is interesting how the painter made this man look bigger than any other object in this painting. He takes up a very big portion of the pain
Another image in the painting that stood out to me was the scenery of the painting. Its looks like the sun is setting. Only half the sun is being shown in the painting. It is the middle of mountains but not in the middle of the painting. Over the sun is a light coming from it going all the way up to the top of the painting. In the painting it is more toward the right side and is very small compared to the rest of the images in the painting. We can see the reflection of the sun in the water, looking like a mirror. The “mirror” is on the top right side of the painting. In “mirror” we can see some of the mountains. The mountains can be seen more vividly on the right side then left. On the left side it looks like a blur of mountains. The mountains take up the top corner of the upper right side and left.
There is a boat in the water that looks much bigger than the rest of the boats there. It looks to be made of wood have yellowish sails. The back sail is much bigger than the front sail. There looks to be no people in the boat. It looks to have a net coming from the boat going all the way up in the middle of the boat. The net looks to have something trapped in it. The boat is on the bottom -right side of the painting. Even though the boat looks to be bigger than all the other boats in the ocean, still the man with the grayish red shirt and grayish dress looks to be bigger than him. There also looks to be a bird siting on one of the sails.
The next image in the painting that catches my eye is a man and his dog herding sheep. The man has on bluish shirt with blackish-gray overalls on. He also has a very long stick that he is holding with both hands. The man and his dog look astonished at something in the sky. The dog next to him is sitting on the dirt. The dog looks to be black with a white coated face. Most of the sheep are white except for three sheep. Those three sheep are grayish-black.
Finally the next image that caught my eye was the city on the right middle side of the painting. There seems to be two parts of this city. One part which is surrounded by water. Across from there there's a city but is blurred. All the boats in the water seem to be going to this city. The buildings look to be made of brick. Another image that caught my eye was a blackish-gray castle. Its toward the right side middle of the painting. There are no windows and only one door. On the back of the castle there are trees and bushes. The caste looks to be made of rock. I wonder if anyone evan lives there. There is also in front two rocks coming from the water. One rock is smaller than the other. The castle is located in front of the city.
The title of this painting is “Landscape with the fall of Icarus”. The painting represents the story of Deadalus and Icarus. The title represents the death of Icarus in a beautiful landscape. The next image that catches my eye is two legs coming from the water. I painter uses these two legs to represent the fall of Icarus from the sky. There is also feathers near the legs. Icarus fell from the sky and drowned because he had gone to close to the sun. The sun had melted the wax off his wings. The sheep and the dog look so astonished because they see two people flying in the sky. They are not sure what exactly is flying but they think it is gods. Icarus fell because the gods wanted to teach the people who were watching a lesson. Those people should not try to beat nature or science. Pieter Bruegel did a good job with expressing the story to the painting. If someone was to analyze the painting they would get a pretty good idea of what went on in the story. Pieter did a good job with showing how only Deadalus cared about his son's death. No one else is paying attention to the boy drowning. The painting is very detailed an explains the many parts of the story of Deadalus and Icarus.
The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, by Pieter Bruegel depicts the myth Daedalus and Icarus. The scene that the painter depicts is of mainly the drowning of Icarus, at the same time there are three mortals at work and other parts of the myth. The details that are in the myth are paint in the painting.
In the myth, the location describes as surrounding by water, the painting shows this by having an island in the middle. On the island, there is a mountain having an opening to what looks like a dungeon. On the right of the dungeon, two rocks are in the water. The painter might paint those rocks to show the bigger one to be Daedalus and the smaller one to be Icarus. The rocks are there to show the fate of the two connects with the sea.
The left of the painting shows two birds in flight, one flying higher then the other. The reason that the birds in the air are Daedalus and Icarus is because in the middle the shepherd is looking towards them with a curious look. As the myth is written, the people looks up from down below as the two flies over the water in amazement. What Bruegel portrays is before Daedalus and Icarus heads for the sky, Daedalus warns of the danger of flying too high and too low. Not heeding the warning, Icarus flies to high. The wax on his wings melts and he plunged into the sea. Icarus is drowning in the only dark part of the water, the rest of the painting that is water is shine by the setting sun.
Bruegel paints the setting sun with significance. The sun is setting instead of rising, because focusing on the farmer, the shadow of the farmer looks as if it extends. Not only the farmer, but also the water near the mountains is a bit darker then the water in the middle of the picture. The sun itself is giving off a light glow off the horizon instead of a sunrise glow, which gives off less of a glow. In myths, nature connects to the gods. The gods are the unexplainable forces in nature including the sun. When Icarus drowns, the sun sets to show that the gods are looking away as if ignoring what is happening to Icarus. The immortals are not the only ones not noticing the death of Icarus.
Returning to the middle of the painting, the three mortals, they are unaware of or not caring of Icarus drowning. The shepherd is looking in the opposite direction of drowning Icarus. The angler is busy fishing while the farmer is busy plowing the land. All three is giving little attention to the dying boy or to death. What the painter might be saying is the mortals are unaware of their own undoing, that they do not know what is coming upon them.
Closing in onto the farmer only, the farmer is busy plowing the land. Bruegel sets the time as spring because people start to work the land at the beginning of spring. What Bruegel wants to show is that people as a whole have to do work. People have to do work from the beginning, whether it was the beginning of the lives or the beginning of humankind. Work is necessary in order for people to survive and live on to the next generation. Not only one person has to work, all the others around him have to work. That is the reason for the shepherd and the angler, both are clearly point out in the painting and the myth.
Connecting to the title, “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus,” Bruegel has brilliantly paints the landscape. The second part of the title is “with the Fall of Icarus” the placing of the second part is important. The great insignificance of Icarus dying falls into play the painter wants only to paint the landscape from the myth. The problem is the landscape he wants to paint is while Icarus drowning therefore he has no choice but to include Icarus into his painting.
Another reason for having painted Icarus to be insignificant is that in the myth, Icarus, very little mentioned. At the period of his death, it was a brief moment and then the myth goes on into another point in the story. The myth moves from Daedalus and Icarus to Theseus and his heroic feats.
The painting Landscape with the fall of Icarus by Bruegel, Pieter is from closer to farter, darker to lighter in the picture. The artist used colors to distribute into 2 parts, as the distant go farther, the color of the picture get lighter. The picture has showed the natural of the world, the life in the picture seems so normal but it also shows the human lot, people have to work in order to exist. The people in the picture remind me the life in the past, the life was so simple and they just used their hands to provide their life.
The first things catch my eyes are the farmer and the sun. The farmer dressing the brighten color red, and stand in the centre of the picture. And the only color in red in the picture is the farmer’s coat. I think the artist is trying to say something though the farmer. And the sky of this landscape is so bright, almost light as the sun in the picture. So this point makes me think it was the time of sun raise not sun set. The sky color of the painting is like winter time, feels heavy, calm, and drowsy. And the farther sky seems like mountains cover by snow, maybe its mountains not sky in both side and goes to the centre. In the closer of the painting has some exuberant trees, the farmer is ploughing, there was shepherd, and fisher man. In the top part of the painting is like winter time, but in the bottom part it feels so warm, alive, and bustling. The farmer is ploughing it shows the time of spring is here or coming. I think this is the reason that the artist draw the farmer in the centre and used the brighten color for his cloth, the artist is trying to show it is the time of spring not winter or summer.
The title of the painting is Landscape with the fall of Icarus. I do not understand it and the first time I looked at the picture, because I can not find Icarus in the picture. But as I looked closer, I found there were 2 feet in the right bottom side of the painting. I think it is the feet of Icarus. The position that Icarus fall was so close to the fisher man and close to the edge too but they seem not things happened. The title of the painting is like Icarus is the main part of the painting but in the painting, Icarus just in the little part of it. I think the artist was trying to tell that myth is myth; it can not affect human’s life bigly.
I see a man plowing with a red shirt I can see too a shepherd looking to the sky o maybe just hanging around there are two black sheep and a dog; there are lots of ships going to the city and the sunset on the back to. Looks like is windy; I can see one fisher in a very small part of the painting and surprisingly two legs surrounded for a lots of feathers at that moment I realize that is Icarus. It’s kind of interesting because nobody help him he looks like he is drowning, everybody is doing their own business, maybe they didn’t really sow him but the fisher is so near from him; it’s impossible not to se Icarus with a little more effort I can see two birds or maybe just one and the other reflected in the sea. There is a little bird very near from the fisher, it’s interesting because is the only one who is watching Icarus. There is an island in the middle of the painting and the sea is very crystalline is possible watch the sun reflected. Near the city there is like a dungeon and two rocks.
All the painting of Breugel was paining with not to shiny colors and he only thing what is the most attracting is the shirt from the man plowing and this man occupy one quarter of the painting is interesting because the lines what is he making with the horse are undulate and they are going to the see that is good clue and there is another with the two sheep because the rest of the group is white and that symbolize Icarus and his father Daedalus.
The title of the painting is “landscape with the fall of Icarus” sound ironic because if I didn’t read myth I wouldn’t kwon who is the guy drowning ad is like very derogatory because it says”landscape” with the fall of Icarus so for me that means that Icarus is like one additive from the painting and if you don’t notice Icarus it really looks like a landscape. Another thing is important for me is how the other humans are very peace with the heart, they are doing very natural things, as I can see and they are like don’t care what the other is doing. That’s interesting because in the myth all three looking of the sky very amazed, but in the painting they look like nothing is happening.
I can say that the painting makes someone who looks at it and knows the myth should feel like upset because Icarus is too small in the painting and nobody cares of him they might hear the screams when he was falling or hear the splash on the water and in a deep meaning that says the nature is in peace with who respect him but if someone tries to bet him would have a bad final and nobody could notice his death, because nature keep the rest so occupied in their daily work that is almost impossible to care about other things like the dead of someone who don’t know who was it or tha son of who is it.
