THE ACCIDENT

I think that in this poem the boy that got hurt was the man’s son because it says how the man’s hands were trembling. I also think that the neighbor brought the kid to the hospital because it says how the neighbor just returned from the hospital. That is what I think about this poem.

I think that in this poem, it was very obvious to figure out what happened to the boy and who the other man in the poem was.

I was never good at interpreting what poems mean. I believe that this poem is about a woman who normally isn’t home during the day, but decides to stay home this particular day only to discover that her husband normally makes breakfast for their neighbor. I think the neighbor is lying when she says that her son was hit by her car and was only covering up why she came into the house “randomly”. Her husband is cheating on her?

mattn6 said...

My take on this short little excerpt is that there is more to the husband’s relationship with the neighbor than that meets the eye, weather it means they’ve maybe been having an affair or something of that kind, this I don’t know, but something has defiantly happened between these two people hat changed something because the seem to know each other better then excepted for neighbors who aren’t that close, who knows maybe he’d made them breakfast before ad that’s how she knows?

BeatrizR6 said...

The poem “The Accident” by Erica Funkhouser theory is the title didn’t really match with the poem because the Husband in the poem did not have an accident. All he did was crack the egg with two hands instead of one. ”A long last he broke the eggs. She had never seen him do it like this before, two-handed.” I’m not sure if it was a metaphor of some kind but it really did confused me.

My theory: In “The Accident”, by Erica Funkhouser, is tat everything is not fine with the neighbors. The man started trembling when he was making egg which is a symptom of fear or nervousness. By showing this, it suggests that everything is not ok and that they fear the son might be in a troubling mess then what they said about the situation.

The Accident by Erica Funkhouser

This poem is about how people care about each other. After the women’s child was grazed by the truck her neighbor came over to the house and waited to find out how he was. The mother went to the hospital and was in her workout cloth. When she gets home and tells everyone that he is fine and the father is cooking for he later it is reviled that he was so worried that his hands are still shaking. This poem is about the relationships between people and how they express how they feel about each other.

My theory or opinion about this poem is the mother’s son got into a very rough accident, being hit by a van while riding his bike. The doctors said he was very lucky to live. The parents went home, while the son spent the night at the hospital worrying and still in shock. The father cooked eggs while the mother sat down speechless about the day

Title: The Accident

The theory of the poem,”The Accident” by Erica Funkhouser is to show how the shock and anxiety of a person comes out very subtly. “This evening his hands where trembling.” This quote shows that the father is trying to hide the fact that his son was just almost hit and killed by the van. Although on a usual night he would try and show off, now he was still trying to take in the events that had happened that night. Both women sit silently as they watch him cook the meal almost knowing how he is feeling. The neighbor seems as though she may live in the house with the wife and the husband. Why is she in the house after such a traumatic event?

My theory of the poem “The Accident”
Is that mother and the son had a bad accident, and they were at the hospital and the mother couldn’t do nothing, like clean, cook, etc, so the dad had to cook, and my opinion is that males can help to, and now days is not like before, how women had to clean and cook and the male had to go to work, so I liked the poem cause the father did helped.

The Accident

The theory of this poem seems to be based on the relationship between the neighbor and the husband in the poem. From information given in the poem one can infer that there is a relationship between the neighbor and the husband which the wife was unaware of. Lines from the text which would suggest this are after the neighbor answers “yes” to the unasked question, the wife thinks of “How many times they had eaten together…” which shows that these two people were around each other more than she had suspected. Another clue to support this is when the neighbor states that “He always liked to show off… …This evening his hands were trembling…” This shows that not only did this man like to show off for her, but this “accident seemed to affect the atmosphere of the whole room, the man was shaking, the neighbor was “still-flushed”. It seems to me that this poem was more or less based on the “accident” in the room rather than the accident concerning the young boy.

Danny T6 said...

My theory on the poem Accident is that it is about change when something serious happens to someone that someone cares about. A mother comes back from the hospital when she finds out that her son is going to be okay but, the family is still in shock and not functioning how it usually is which you can tell by the father who usually shows off by cracking an egg with one hand to cracking it with 2 hands, which is easier. And you can see that the father was afraid for his son by seeing that his hands were trembling as he was cracking his eggs with two hands.

Kristi G. 6 said...

Title: The Accident

The short story seems to be about a family who’s facing struggles. The woman comes back from the hospital after checking on her son. “He seemed to be fine” the woman says. The husband starts to cook eggs for her. This seems to be a surprise to her, because she never had seen him cook for her. The woman finds this as a shock on watching the husband cook eggs for her. This is a shock for her probably because her husband was growing old and had some kind of a disability.

Aggnes Z. 6 said...

The problem stared with someone in the hospital, and the neighbor came communicating to the woman in the house. She just came from the running time. However the relationship between the husband and the wife is so strange, because he does the home jobs for her. But something was wrong, because the attitude for the man at this day was different. He did something that he never did before.

Brittany K. 6 said...

Dear Emilio,
Your theory about the poem is a very interesting one. One that almost twists the whole poem into a whole new line of thinking. If that makes any sense. I never thought of the neighbor and the husband haveing an affair i suppose that would make sense as to why his hands where trembling as he made the eggs. Now that i read the poem again i interpert it a completely different way. But do you consider that maybe they where just all good friends and maybe her son really is in the hospital. Just a thought to think about

mattn6 said...

Dear EmilioB

I think that you made a lot of good accusations and thoughts about the poem we also shared some of the same ideas, especially the idea you have at the end when u mention the thought of her husband is cheating on her.

The theory of this poem was explaining that Nadine’s (the neighbor) son got hit by a delivery van. Richard (the husband) and Lola (the husband’s wife) was in the kitchen, when Nadine comes in with the news. All of the sudden Lola notice a change in Richard he become scared and start trembling. He doesn’t show off like he usually does. That leave the reader (me) thinking it must has been him driving the delivery van all along.

markr6 said...

i think the husband is having an affair or at one time did have one with the neighbor. Also that her son that;s in the hospital is the child of the woman's husband. He seems worried over another's kid. Everyone is worried when a friend family is injured, but he's a different kind of worried. When it's friends they ususally try to comfort the one they are accuainted with btu in this case he's more worried about the kid. So i think there is a deeper realtionship between them which is why I came to the possibility he is that child's father.

Danny T6 said...

Dear Mattn6

I disagree with your theory that the husband is having an affair because I think the man cracking the eggs is the person who got into an accident’s son which is why I don’t agree. Also I think that the man and woman are married which would explain why she knows how he cracks his eggs.

Dear MarkR6

I liked your blog and I agree with you that people “to keep their mind of what's happening they'll do their best to keep themselves busy”. I believe that this is true however I disagree with you that people “tend to seclude themselves”. It is true that some people often do but just as often people will try to find other people to consol them or to help them through it. If people try and deal with everything alone then eventually it will get to them.

I totally didn’t get the poems because it was so hard and all they talk about is the dad cooking eggs, and crack them with one hand instead of two hands. I know the story have to do with a kid and a woman, but the woman come back from the hospital with her son. Her son got hurt by crossing the street on a bike. I think the families love to eat eggs.

you are somewhat right about the relationship between the husband and the wife because it seems like the wife is like the man of the house and the husband is the cooking lady. so that kind of clears some parts of the poem.

The theory of this poem is that the woman’s husband is cheating on her with the neighbor. He begins to get nervous cooking eggs with the neighbor around when his wife is also around. His wife mentions that when he usually cooks eggs, he shows off, but with the neighbor there, he shakes and brakes the egg with two hands to be careful.

Molly B 7 said...

My theory on the poem “The Accident” is a lot of different things. For one I think that maybe when the son got in the accident that the husband was very upset about it and didn’t really want to make eggs for the wife. The husband seems to try and make everything ok when its not, so maybe he had done something wrong and just didn’t want to tell anyone.

The Accident

I don’t usually read and interpret poems however from what I read in this poem I had a certain scene set in my mind. What I think that was going on in this poem was that neighbor that was eating at the kitchen table was actually the husband’s mistress. Sounds funny, but as they spoke about the man cooking food trembling as his wife sat with the neighbor this idea came upon me that he was cheating on his wife. I don’t know if this is true or what it has to do with “The Accident” but that’s what I thought.

The Accident

In this poem, a neighbor visits a husband and wife’s house. Her son had been in the hospital overnight after being hit by a van. She proceeds to the kitchen table and takes a seat. The wife questions, “How man times had they eaten together?” after the neighbor says, “Yes” to the husband without him asking. The husband seems a little shaky while cooking breakfast. Maybe is there an affair going on and he’s nervous because both women are in the same room? Maybe he’s scared something will be said.

Yulin W7 said...

I don’t really get it, but I think that it is about something between friendships.Because the neighbor must be very good friends with them or them had know each other for a long time. Because in the poem, “her husband had not even mentioned eggs, but the neighbor knew he was going to cook for her. How many times had they eaten together.” If they aren’t knew each other for a long time or good friends they won’t know each other so well. And they won’t eat together. And the neighbor won’t go to the hospital with the husband.

annemarie L 7 said...

My theory is that the husband was nervous and afraid when he had cracked the eggs with two hands making the wife sense something was the matter. The wife has also sensed a lot happening in the room after the neighbor had answered her without the question being said out loud. I think that something was going on between the husband and the neighbor because of how the husband was going to cook for her without asking and how the wife wondered, “How many times have they eaten together? Enough.” “The Accident” could’ve been the wife had caught their neighbor and her husband after returning from the hospital.

"The Accident"

My theory of the poem is that a boy got hit by a truck and went to the hospital. His mother jus got back from the hospital and went to her neighbor’s house. She was still wearing the same clothes. She seemed very distraught. The neighbor’s husband was making breakfast and he was very nervous “At long last he broke the eggs...into the pan to quiet the sizzling fat.” (Ll. 39-49) from these lines I was thinking that maybe the women’s husband was the driver of the truck that hit the boy. The husband was very nervous and seemed shaken up by something. There is the possibility that he was shaken up by the simple fact that his neighbor’s son got hit by a truck, but the husband being the driver is what first came to mind.

Wes M 7 said...

I believe that the boy’s father did this intentionally to get some free time with the neighbor. It seems as if the breakfast with her is a usual event, only this time the privacy was intruded by his wife. It seems very clear that he is cheating on his wife based on his reactions as well. Noted in the poem it says his hands are trembling and he appears to be very nervous on this particular morning. Maybe this is because he fears his wife has caught him in the midst of his breakfast time fun with the neighbor, and by putting one plus one together ultimately discovering his true ways.

JohnN7 said...

In this poem is that the family is feeling sympathy for the neighbor’s son because he’s incredibly lucky that he survived the hit. The woman that rushes into the house is her son that stayed the night in the hospital because of the delivery van while on his bike. They are having a tragic moment because of the son since they could be long time friends because of the fact that they’re both neighbors. The man trembled which changed in his way of cracking eggs with two hands when he usually shows off with one hand being nervous showing sympathy to the neighbor’s son.

Mike B 7 said...

To me, “The Accident” seems to not only be an accident by getting grazed by a van, but something happening in the relationship as well. Somehow the neighbor knew he was going to cook for her and knew exactly what was being made, so it shows they are hiding certain things from the wife. To me this sounds like an affair going on and judging by the way the husband hasn’t been going through his routines normally. If there is cheating involved, then the husband and the neighbor are terrible at hiding it.

The Accident
I believe the poem is about a mother going through the pain of having her child in the hospital after being hit by a van, seeing how everyone is so shook up by the situation and how her family is slightly changing right in front of her eyes.
Evidence
“At long last he broke the eggs.
She had never seen him
Do it like this before, two-handed.
He always likes to show off
By breaking the eggs with one hand.
This evening
His hands were trembling
As he cracked the eggs
On the skillet’s rim hurrying to slide the whole brimming mess into the pan
To quiet the sizzling fat.”

The accident

My theory on this poem is that the husband is not showing off his skills in the kitchen liked he always does because the accident might have brought back memories that he does not like. To me the accident of the neighbor’s son reminded him of the time he had an accident and he got seriously injured. This might be one of the reasons why the neighbor is not seen all of the mans skill on how to break an egg with one hand.

Chad O 7 said...

Dear Zak t06,

Your comment wasn’t really a theory but basically you just summarized the poem. I do agree with you however that the mother was speechless, but not about the son if it even was her son. I believe that the whole story about the son was made up because the husband is cheating on his wife with the neighbor. The story was just a cover up. The husband was nervous, because he didn’t want the wife finding out.

Dian z 7 said...

I think the theme of the poem is wants to show the husband has some relationship with the neighbor. At the beginning of the poem, the neighbor rushed in the house. This scene shows the neighbor wanted to tell the news that her son had a car accident to her neighbor anxiously. At the middle of the poem, the neighbor answered “yes” to a question the women’s husband had not yet asked. This scene shows this is not the first time the husband cooked in the neighbor’s sight. They seemed to have known each other for a long time. The poem also describes the woman watching wondered that how many times had they eaten together. At the end of the poem, the neighbor’s face flushed, and the husband seemed to be nervous. The husband did some strange thing he never did before. It’s weird. Why the husband did strange thing after the neighbor showed up? So I think there maybe some problems with the husband and the neighbor.

Alex J 7 said...

In the poem “The Accident” by Erica funkhouser I have a theory of the fact that the husband “Grazed” the son and now is in the presence of the mother which caused internal conflict for the husband. I feel the woman had a suspicion of the husband from when she had said “yes” so fast before he had even gotten a chance to ask if the son was alive or not. The poem had stated the husbands hands were trembling which showed uneasiness to the situation at hand. Also, the fact that the husband didn’t “show off” with the eggs means that a change had occurred within his life to make him act like this. He had to use both of his hands on the egg, which he never does.

Mike B 7 said...

Dear Zak t06,

Your theory to me didn't really seem like one. It sounded as though yours was just basically rewording everything and didn't explain how you felt about it.

annemarie L 7 said...

Dear beatrizr6,

I think "The Accident" fits the poem well because it fits in with the entire poem of how the wife caught the husband and the neighbor together. Then again, that's what I think, it might not be the right answer.

wen Z 7 said...

In my opinion, this poem is about the relationship between the woman’s husband and the neighbor. When the son just came back with her mother from hospital, the neighbor came. I think the title “The accident” isn’t side for the son’s accident, just for the neighbor and the woman’s husband. Because the neighbor answered “Yes”, but no one asked. Other wise, when the man cooked, he didn’t like usual. And his hands were trembling. So I think the man was very nervous at that time.

Ericka R. 7 said...

Dear Emilio B

To be honestly I would have never thought of the poem that way. It never occured to me that the neighbor was a mistress or something. It does makes sense though, the title could mean the husband's wife being there, instead of what seems like the obvious the boy being hit by a truck.

Molly B 7 said...

Kyle g. 6
I don’t think you really explained what you thought. You kind of just rewrote what the poem said in your own words I don’t think it was really a theory.

Alex T 7 said...

I believe that the poem is describing a close call on behalf of the secret affair between a man and his neighbor. The man seems to be very uncomfortable in his dealings with his wife not acting as his normal “show off” self. The neighbor is described as “still-flushed” apparently out of guilt or the fact that the man was acting in a peculiar unrest manner. The speaker makes note of the awkward situation allowing the reader to believe that the man’s wife knows that something is out of line.

Oscar R7 said...

Dear Zak t06,

i think that you didn't come up with a theory, you actually just summarize it which doesn't show the way you understood what the poem was about

My theory for the poem “Accident” by Erica Funkhouser is that the mother is recalling the accident that had happened with her son to the neighbor. After recalling everything the mother invites the neighbor over. So the neighbor observers what is happening in the house. If anything has changed after the accident or not.

jonathanB7 said...

After carefully reading the poem I stumbled upon a theory that I thought made sense. It seems to me that the woman’s husband is having an affair with the neighbor. The neighbor came over the house because the husbands’ wife invited her. The neighbor and the wife are good friends. But on lines 21-27 the mood shifted “It was when the neighbor answered “ yes” to a question the woman’s husband had not yet asked that the woman finally understood Her husband had not even mentioned eggs, but the neighbor knew he was going to cook for her. How many times had they eaten together the woman watching wondered. Enough.” The husband finally senses something’s wrong “his hands were trembling.” (line45) The fact that both women were in the room made him nervous.

amanb7 said...

Dear Oscar R7
i think you have a whole wrong idea for the poem because the neighbor is a woman not man there can be a affair going on between the neighbor and the guy that why he can be nervouse cause both women are in the same room not because hes mad and knows that the 2 women have a affair.

What made you think that the accident is the husband is cheating on his wife?

I think the neighbor is somehow important to the mother. I think so because she went to the hospital and then came back very fast to tell the mother everything was ok. I think the mother finds out about the affair and she ask herself questions about it,like how many times they ate together,

I was interested in your comments on the husband “Grazed” the son. I’m confused about the fact you provided. You said the neighbor answered “yes” was for the question that the husband had not asked if the son was alive or not. But at the beginning of the poem, it described the neighbor’s son only had a few bruises, a superficial wound above the knee, incredible luck. This shows the son was alive. So I wonder whether the husband was going to ask the question about the neighbor’s son or not.

I believe this poem is describes A woman gets in the home from the hospital, she discovers a neighbor in her house. When the woman asked her husband about this neighbor, her husband demonstrates an intense feeling. The woman has the suspicion between neighbor and her husband based on “It was when the neighbor answered "yes" to a question the woman's husband had not yet asked”. In this point, the woman stats to think about The neighbor and her husband are not the ordinary relations, has the deep understanding between them. Also, the husband's actions while cooking eggs tries to hurry the process, to make like everything is fine. In here, I believe the neighbor and her husband are concealing the woman.

I really liked the quote you used when you said “The neighbor’s husband was making breakfast and he was very nervous” At last he broke the eggs… into the pan to quiet the sizzling fat.” (Ll. 39-49) The quote really proves the point you’re trying to make. The woman doesn’t find it shocking the fact that his cooking eggs. She finds it shocking because she realizes something about her husband. The theory that you gave fits perfectly with the quote you gave. I believe the woman finds out that her husband is having some kind of an affair with the woman because the husband cooks for the neighbor and never cooks for her.
