Throughout the whole play, you are to keep a notebook (see Reader's Notebook Rubric) on two characters and one "strand" which runs through Hamlet.

  • Fortune & Fate
  • words words words
  • Water & Liquid
  • prison
  • “strumpetness”
  • Ghosts
  • Light
  • Dark

  • Dreams

Major Characters:

  • Hamlet
  • Ophelia

Other Characters:

  • Gertrude
  • Claudius
  • Horatio

By the end of the month, you must make a post documenting which strand you are investigating and which two characters you are focusing on and why (very brief). This is a very easy homework grade.

Hamlet,

I have chosen Gertrude and horatio for the two characters to write about the reason why is Gertrude (The Mother of Hamlet) has a past that really shocked me, when i heard that after Hamlett's father death she feeling lonely went on and had a relationship with Hamlets uncle which was Hamlet's father's brother so i want to know what happens to that dramatic situation. I also choose Horatio because it is Hamlet's Best friend and i want to know the relationship he has with him and if any problems occur between them. The Strain that i choose was flora because i want to know how plants are involved in the story.

The strand I’ve chosen to focus on is “Dark”. Dark is a very common symbol that usually all have the same meaning, for instance death. It can be used in different wording such as the night time which is obviously dark. The two characters I’ve chosen to focus on are Hamlet and Horatio. Hamlet, of course is the main character and we should be dealing with him a lot, figuring out what kind of person he really is. Connecting to Hamlet is his “BFF” Horatio, who already in the beginning is showing quite a few of specific characteristics.

he strand I’ve chosen to focus on is “ghost”.i choose the ghost because it is a character in the novel and because it sees like it will be very important and it looks like it will help hamlet a lot during the book. The two characters I’ve chosen to focus on are Hamlet and grertrude. Hamlet, of course is the main character and we should be dealing with him a lot, figuring out what kind of person he really is. Connecting to Hamlet is his mom who just lost a very important person but still got marry with hamlet uncle this will probaly leds to a comflict and i will have a lot to write about.

The strand that I chose is"Prison" it is a unqiue symbol, and might be a great strand to work on throughout Hamlet. The major character that I chose was Hamlet, becuase since the book is called "Hamlet" everything will be revolved around him. The second character that i chose is Claudius Hamlet's uncle but his dad at the same time "Odd" :p. I chose Claudius becuase I wanted to get know more about this character.

The "strand" I have choosen is the ghost and for my main character, I chose Hamlet. I selected Horatio for my second choice of character. The reason why I chose these character is because Hamlet is one of the main characters and he plays a significant part in this play and Horatio is Hamlet's bestfriend and spend the most time with him.

I chose Hamlet because him being the protagonist, I hope to have enough and good material to write about. I also picked Laertes because I think that there might be a relationship between Ophelia and Hamlet, brothers usually protect their sisters, so I hope there is going to be a conflict between Laertes and Hamlet.
My strand is "water". Water is the fountain of all life, so there might be some imagery relating to it.

I chose to investigate fauna because animals are usually significant to characters and they might make the novel more interesting. For the two characters, I chose Hamlet and Claudius. I chose them because they are they have a weird relationship. The fact that Claudius is Hamlet's uncle and step-father makes makes me wonder about how they view each other in the novel.

I chose to investigate Fortune & Fate because Fortune & Fate are happen a lot in the novel that wrote by him shparpers, and most of the Fortune & Fate are relat to the main character. For the two characters, I chose Hamlet and Claudius. I chose them because they are they have a weird relationship. The fact that Claudius is Hamlet's uncle and step-father makes makes me wonder about how they view each other in the novel and they may has a bid prombel with each other.

The strand I have decided to focus on is eye/I. I thought this would be interesting to see the interaction between the two words and possibly the irony that may occur. The two characters that I have chosen to focus on are Ophelia and Gertrude. I thought it would be interesting to see how the relationship between the two women is throughout the book. Since Ophelia is Hamlets girlfriend and Gertrude is Hamlets mother and she married her brother in law. I thought it would be interesting to see how Gertrude views her sons girlfriend.

the strand i decided to focus on is water&liquid. i chose water&liquid because water is very important and mystery thing to me, and water can be a lot shapes, and when touch, you will feel cold, lonely. then i chosen the major character is Hamlet, because Hamlet is the title character and he is the protagonist, and i am interesting in him, and also i chose other character is Horatio, because he is Hamlet's best friend and he saw the ghost sometimes, and he wants to tell Hamlet about that and Shakespeare was put him in the beginning to describe a lot about him. so, i will focus on Hamlet and Horatio in this book.

The stand that I have chosen is “Water and Liquid” I chose this because it looked like it doesn’t fit the choices out of all the other choices. My major character that I picked was Hamlet because the book is named Hamlet and I wanted to know more about this character and what happens to him in the book. The other character I picked was Horatio, I picked him because he is Hamlet’s best friend and I also wanted to learn more about him and if he is really Hamlet’s best friend.

The strand I decided to focus on is Flora. I chose Flora because it's another word for flowers and I was curious what flowers had to do with this book Hamlet and what it symbolizes. The major character I will be focusing on is Hamlet reason for being is that's the title of the book and I wanted to explore about Hamlet in this book. The other character I decided to follow was Hamlet's best friend Horatio, simply because It's Hamlet's best friend and I wanted to see what these two have in common and how they co-exist throughout the novel "Hamlet".

HauInS1 said...

The strand that I have chosen is "light". Light is a very common symbol in literature. I want to know if it symbolize any special things in Hamlet. I want to focus on Hamlet and Claudius. Hamlet is the protagonist is the play, and there should be many interesting thing happened to him. Also, the tragic hero always has his tragic flaw, I want to investigate more about that. For Claudius, which is Hamlet's uncle and stepfather, I want to know more about their relationship; if there is any special reason for him to marry Queen Gertrude and how he affect the whole play.

Juliana C 7 said...

The Strand that I've chosen is "Dreams”, because the plays that I know from Shakespeare can be defined as dreams, since they are stories that wouldn’t happen in real life, however it’s nice to dream it would. “Dreams” can also be related to Hamlet, something he wishes after the death of his father, or the ghost that apparently is his father’s. The two characters that I’ve chosen to focus on are “Hamlet” and “Queen Gertrude”, since they mother and son, their relationship might be a big part in Hamlet’s life when he doesn’t have a father anymore; also, Hamlet being the main character, and his mother with this interesting story with his uncle might be interesting throughout the book. I predict arguments and conflicts between these two, hoping to have a lot to write and discuss about these two important characters.

Jess J2 said...

The strand i have choosen is dark because i think it will be symbolic in the death of King Hamlet. The ghost only appears in the dark which leads me to beleive that time of day is significant to the plot. The major character i have picked is Ophelia. The other character i picked is Horatio because i think he is also very important in the death of King Hamlet.

Jesse L. 2 said...

The strand that I've chosen is Ghosts because it is considered as one of many important characters that are going to be primarily focused on to make the plot flow. Ophelia is the major character I chose because I heard from many books that she is a character that has been betrayed by someone and would later turn on them, eventually leading to tragedy. I also picked Gertrude because I learned from places that she is part of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern's guild of causing trouble, which makes it even interesting.

Diana B2 said...

I’ve chose to focus on the characters Ophelia and Gertrude. For a strand I chose dreams. I chose Ophelia and Gertrude because they are both woman. I have a better chance of understanding them then any of the other characters in Hamlet. I also chose Gertrude because already I can see that she is an interesting character. She married Hamelt’s brother not too long after his death already says a lot about who is she. I can also learn a lot about Hamlet through her. For a strand I chose dreams because people’s unconscious feelings are through their dreams which would allow me to better understand the characters.

KenneyD1 said...

The strand i chose for Hamlet is "dreams". Shakespeare uses this in many plays of his as a way for man to connect to what he really wants, or to see what will happen to him in the future. Dreams basically have no limits which can push Shakespeare to creating any scene, act, or device. Dreams sound like it will play a good part in the play Hamlet. As for the Major character i chose Hamlet, mainly because the play revolves around this character. The minor character i chose was Horatio, because hes Hamlet's BFF...This means there are many possibilities from betrayel to friendship and other themes.

Tony Seng said...

The strand I chose was "Prison," because it could mean one of their own people is going to prison, and I think it would be unlikely some outsider would be a prisoner. The two characters I've chosen was Hamlet and Gertrude. I think these characters are going to be interesting because, Hamlet's mother is now married to his uncle which is awkward and kind of adds a bad reputation to the family.

jalisaf1 said...

I have chosen Fortune and Fate for my strands. Because I know their is going to be a lot of that going on in this novel of "Hamlet" because I know that between hamlet and Ophelia theirs going to be a lot of love between them two. Also i have picked Ophelia and her brother Laertes because i think Ophelia is going to be really important in most of this novel because she meets Hamlet and also i picked laertes because I know that he is going to be a very over protective of his sister if she does fall in love with Hamlet in the long run.

The strand I have chose is water and liquid. The reason why is because water could symbolize endlessness and purity. Water could be significant to the play. The two characters I chose to focus on are Hamlet and Horatio. The reason why I chose those two characters is because Hamlet is one of the main characters of the play and there could be many connections. I chose Horatio because he is one of the top sentinels in the play. He is also Hamlets friend which means he may know more about Hamlet and may have some connections with Hamlet.

erika said...

The characters that I chose were Horatio and Gertrude. I chose Horatio because he’s a smart guy who has characteristics that might be similar to Hamlet. I also chose Gertrude because I thought it was very interesting how she married Hamlet’s uncle after King Hamlet of Denmark’s death. My strain is “ghost(s)”. I chose Ghosts because I thought it was important how William Shakespeare decided to begin his play with the ghost of King Hamlet, who is the dad of Hamlet, and should be a big part of his life throughout the book.

Susan M 7 said...

The two characters I picked were Ophelia and Horatio. I picked Ophelia because I wanted to follow female character so I could relate to her. Also using her I could compare her to other characters that Shakespeare had such as Lady Macbeth. I could even compare her to myself and see like her view on things as a female. I then picked Horatio as my next character. He seemed different from the other characters because he's scholar. I wanted to learn more about him. My strand is the dark because it can be symbolic for many different things. I think it may even foreshadow some evil or bad events that will happen or even the death of Hamlet.

will l1 said...

The strand I have chosen is water and liquid. Water/liquid has the ability to change. Water is a powerful force in nature. I have chosen Hamlet for the major character because he is the protagonist of the play. As for the other character, I have chosen Claudius. He is Hamlet's uncle and stepfather. Their perspective of the other is different from their own. Hamlet was forced onto Claudius as a step-son by his mother.

CASEYG1 said...

The strand that I choose was "Ghosts," the reason why I choose ghosts was because Hamlet is an old book, and in that time they could have strongly believed in ghosts. I was also thinking about what they think happens after death with their souls. The whole strand "ghosts" just seemed to pop out compared to the rest of them, which to me seemed as though maybe the topic was one that showed a major theme.
I had chosen the character Ophelia because I want to view the story in a womens point of view. Alsom I choose Laertes because it's Ophelia's brother, and they can relate due to their family relation. There could be more to write about since it's a brother/sister relationship.

The strands that I decided to focus on were dreams, Ophelia, and Gertrude. I chose dreams becasue they usually symbolize something that will happen in the future, or sometimes they could be warnings that tell us what might happen next. I chose Gertrude, because after reading a summery of hamlet; I thought she was an interesting character for marrying her husband's brother right after his death. I chose Ophelia, because wanted to know what her relationship had to do with hamlet.

I chose the strain darkness because when reading reading books in class it always interests me the most. The characters I picked were Ophelia and Horatio. I picked Ophelia instead of Hamlet because I figured I could relate to her more. I picke Horatio because his name stood out to me more than the others.

The strand I choose was the stand dark. I choose this strand because it’s the one I’m most familiar with. The characters I choose were Hamlet and Horatio. I choose these characters because they sound like to me the one that would have the most happen between them.

I chose Ophelia as my character, because I am a girl and i would like to see the point of the story in a female's perspective. I chose eye/I as my strand, because the word "I" is used alot in the human language, and you see with your eyes. I chose Marcellus as my other strand because he seems like a down-to-earth, cool person.

Nicke F2 said...

The strand I chose is words words words. The main character I chose was Claudious. And the major character I chose was Hamlet. I chose them cause I liked there discriptions and thought it would be easy to write about them.

Hamlet

The strain that i picked was dark, because darkness has to do with evil and emptyness or oblivion, and in this play hamlet, i think there will be alot of darkness shown in this play. The characters i chose where hamlet and horaito. I chose hamlet because he is the main character and i'd like to learn more about him and his past and what lead to his downfall. Next, i chose Horatio, because his is hamlets best friend and would seem to know about hamlet the most, but he is also an interesting character because of being so smart but lacking common sense at the same time.

I have chosen Ophelia and Polonius for the two characters to follow in the story. I have chosent them because Ophelia is close with Hamlet and i would like to see how their relationship is. I have chosen Polonius because this is Ophelias father and i would like to understand how father daughter relationships were back in the time the story took place. For my strand i chose dreams because dreams are usually very important and mean a lot. They also usually have a lot of symbolism in them. Those are the characters and strand i have chosen for Hamlet.

My train is light because light also a significant imagery in literature. Hamlet is a main character also known as the tragic hero in the play. I am interesting about how hamlet would handle his situation of his mother and Claudius King. I know that Horatio is a smart guy that represents one side of Hamlet character. He also a connection between Hamlet and his dead father.

Stephanie_C7 said...

The strand that I chose is Fortune and Fate because I think that throughout the play everyone kind of has a lot of misfortune going on and they are trying to meet their fate in a positive way of life.
And the characters that I chose are Hamlet and Ophelia, because I think that they are going to have a lot of problems trying to be together, and staying together, because Ophelia’s father unapproved of the choices that she makes in her life. And also because they are both going through a hard time accepting all the changes that are happening in their lives: Ophelia—her brother leaving, Hamlet—his father’s death, and his mother marrying his uncle.

Samy F. per.1 said...

i chose dreams because in the dreams it can tell the reader about a person's deeper emotions and feelings.
i chose Hamlet becuase he is the protagonist of the story and i'm curious about how he matures throughout the book.
claudius because i want to read about him and hamlet clash with each other, and i want to know the resolution

Linda e 7 said...

The strand I chose to focus on is "words words words" because I want to see the kind of techniques William Shakespeare uses while writing this play. Also, I chose the character Ophelia because I want to figure out her importance in the play and I want to know about her relationship with Hamlet. Also,I chose the character Claudius because I want to know if he makes the big twist of the book.

my strand is fauna meaning animal and I chose Hamelt because he is the main character. Second character is Horatio because he seems funny.

Miranda V2 said...

My strand is strumpetness. I chose Ophelia and Laertes as my characters to follow. I chose Ophelia mainly because she is a female and I am interested more in her relationship with Hamlet than Hamlet himself. I chose Laertes because he is Ophelia's brother and their relationship may be more significant than that between her and her father.

My strad i had chosen is "flora" because i am interested what it is doing in the play im intereted to know how it relates or serves as what in the play.
I chose Ophelia and Hamlet for characters because they are the main characters and i want to know what will happen in their relation and it would be easy to follow for what will happen in the entire play because they were connected. Im also interested to the ending if they will be a happy ending or sad.

Anonymous said...

my strad is dark, because dark have different kinds of meanning and i believe that is one of the most used words in this play.
my two character what i choose are hamlet and polonius because those characters have a big influence in the play and the internal conflict of each of my characters becomes more interesting in the play

Judith D. 1 said...

As my strains, I picked strumpetness; which means around the way girl. I think the word strumpetness will come into the novel some more. For my major characters, I picked Ophelia because I feel like the word strumpetness will later match her in the novel. For my other characters, I picked Polonius.

Light is a rather repetitive symbol within many works of literature but most of the time the most important symbol, what light can come of a tragic hero Hamlet. Choosing Hamlet and Claudius as the two characters is going to be rather bizarre, just waiting to find out how these two are going to interact with each other, when Hamlets new father and king of Denmark is his own uncle Claudius.

Kelly Cheang said...

I chose the stranin Dark because I think people have a light side and a dark side which they do not used to show infront of others and i am interested in it.
I chose Hamlet and Horatio this two characters because I am interested in how a friend of a prince would be, and I think that the interaction between them would be funny. Hamlet is the main character and would have more description on him, I like to watch how a tragic hero falls to warn myself about their tragic flaw

Edlin V 7 said...

My choice of a strain is "flora", because im interested in seeing what is being compared &/or contrasted in Hamlet with nature. Plus i think about flowers & i love flowers. For my characters i chose Ophelia & Gertrude. I want to know how women's view and prospective is in Hamlet. Knowing Ophelia married her brother-in-law; i want to know how the awkwardness affects Hamlet. And just to be curious with Gertrudes relationship with Hamlet.

Unknown said...

I have chosen Ophelia and Gertrude out of the characters and how it will connect to the stand Water & liquid. I chose these characters because I believe each one represents a very important message in "Hamlet". I think that the way Gertrude is acting concerning her marriage with her brother and law is going to effect how Hamlet will look at women. Maybe in the story he is going to loose all respect for women and then when he does he will treat Ophelia with no respect and because of how he looks at his mom. How it will connect with h20, I can't say that I know but I am waiting for it to connect.

Anonymous said...

I have chosen Fortune and Fate as my first topic since Sheakspeare likes to use this in his tragedies. Such as "Romeo and Juliet", their fate was mentioned in the intoroduction of the play.
For my first character I chose Ophelia since the main female part is always interesting, and then I chose Claudius since he will be one of Hamlet's problems and will no doubt make trouble for him.

Dreams have always been a great part of Shakespeare's play. It's always interesting to see how Shakespeare connects dreams with real life. The characters I have chosen is Laertes and Ophelia. Laertes name caught my eye because I'm a big fan of mythology. I chose Ophelia because she's Laertes sister and there's no stronger connection than a brother that cares for his sister.

aquaV said...

i have chosen Lartes and Gertrude. i chose lartes because i caught my attention i want to know how he is goin to affect his sister and father as he leaves and i want to know how he is goin to come back in the story. Gertrude also caught my a attention. what shocked me about her is marrying her brother in law and how quick she did it. i want to see how far there relationship will go and how hamlets goin to handle that. my strand i picked is Eye/I i want to know how this connects with the story.

I have chosen Ophelia and Laertez because since they are related then it would be easy for me to write alot about their conversations that they have together and the strand that I chose is Flora because up till were we are the flora image has shown up at least twice now and there should be more to come.

The characters I’ve chosen are Ophelia and Claudius. I’m interested in the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia and I want to see how important Ophelia is throughout the play, since she’s considered to be a major character. I’ve also chosen Claudius because I want to see what happens between him and Hamlet since he is Hamlet’s uncle and father. Something has to happen between them if this is true. The strand I’ve chosen is dreams. I think that dreams always mean something and I want to see how they play a part in the play Hamlet.

Paco G 2 said...

I am going to choose Light. I'd rather trace Ophelia through the play. Laertes is the character I choose for other characters.

Yan X.2 said...

I am chosen “eye/I”, because eye is always representing the window of the spirit heart. And through the expression of the eyes can see one’s mood and personality. Some people can understand what other people are thinking through the eyes. All the images that human see can affect their thought. “Eye” and “I” are pronounced very similar and very people have their own eyes, and they both are representing personal and individual. So I think “eye/I” has greatly concern in Hamlet.
And I focus on Polonius and Gertrude those two characters. Polonius is the principal secretary of state and father of Ophelia, the reason I chose him because he’s the one that try the separate his daughter and Hamlet to be together. And Gertrude has many roles in Hamlet. She’s the Queen of Denmark, the wife of Kind Hamlet and Claudius, and the mother of Hamlet. All the roles she acted are representing a woman, so I am interesting on how she affect the Denmark.

Light is a theme that has shown up in the past reading, Icarus and Daedalus, Camus, and Cat's Cradle. Now it is also the theme for Hamlet. The first character is Ophelia, women, the cause of men's downfall. The second character is Laertes, the name that has shown up in The Odyssey.

yan w p7 said...

The strand I chose is Ghost; I think the ghost plays an important role in this play book, moreover, the ghost’s appearance is absolutely indicate something important or calamitous about to occur, because the ghost is spirit of a dead person, his appearance is usually because of dies with a grievance or everlasting regret and revenge, therefore result in the tragic.
The major character in the book is Hamlet, and the two characters I chose are Claudius and Horatio, because I think a tragedy especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw or a moral weakness. Usually a major character needs two men in the play book, a zealous supporter and opponent. Claudius marries his brother's wife, which is an incestuous act makes him as an opponent. Horatio plays his friend, who helping with Hamlet’s revenge.

The characters I chose are Ophelia and Gertrude. While the strand for Hamlet is light. I chose Ophelia and Gertrude because they are both in hamlet’s life and they are women. I could connect to them because am a woman just like them. Gertrude is an interesting character because she married her late husband brother. Light is always an important symbol in literature it also represents when something important is happening in any literature.

I have chosen Ophelia and Gertrude as the two characters I would like to focus on, because they fit into my topic of the year and are the most interesting to me. Ophelia has to deal with a conflict of love and/or family, never an easy choice I want to know which she chooses and why. Gertrude had to deal with the loss of her husband, though instantly going to his brother doesn’t make sense to me it does make me want to learn more about it. The strain I chose is light it seems like such a “dark” story, I’d like to see how light will be used.

i have chosen Hamlet and King Hamlets ghost as my two strand i will be focusing on. Because these two characters connecti in many ways. Theres no closer bond then father and son. Hamlet feels very concomfortable witt the way things ended up after the death of his father. So king Hamlet's ghost is saving Hamlet's life in the long run I believe.

Unknown said...

The stand that I choose was "Strumptness" because i feel that it is an intersting topic and there would be some juicy sections in the play about people being in many different relations ships with two or more people. The characters that I choose were Ophelia and King Claudius. The reason why I choose Ophelia is becasue she is on of the characters who have a relationship with one on the main characters in the story,Hamlet. King Claudius characher have some evil behind him that would also keep my attention because i would want to see what he would do or say next.

The strand I choose to write about is flora. I chose this strand because I've never heard of flowers being mentioned in the summary of Hamlet so I'm curious to see how they fit into the plot of the story. The two characters I picked to write about are Ophelia and Gertrude. I wanted to do Ophelia because this is Hamlets lover. I want to know all about her. What she did exactly to make Hamlet fall so madly in love with her and how she feels about Hamlets transformation. I choose Gertrude because of the summary that i got from her description. She seems like an interesting woman. I also want to know why she married her dead husbands brother and how she feels about Hamlet not agreeing with that decision.

ilensj7 said...

The strand that I picked was prison; I wanted to see how a prison would make someone act. Does being in a prison bring out the truth in someone? Since the name of the play is Tragedy of Hamlet I thought predicted that someone in the play would go to jail. May even yet be in prison from there own mind set. Within the characters they feel like they are in a prison of life. Denmark is a jail for them. The two characters I picked were Hamlet and Horatio. They best buds and wanted to see the relationship between them. If there is true friendship among them. Will one another stab each of them in the back.

Anonymous said...

The strand i chose was Darkness because Hamlet is always in the dark meaning confused on teh situtation that is happening. Being in the dark, is not knowning whats going on in your surroundings. Hamlet stuggles with confusion throughout the play. Hamlet needs to grow teh courage to say and do whats on his mind. The strand darkness can mean different things being in a dark place, hiding from your problems, in a confused or difficult situtation or even trapped with no way out. The dark is full of surprises you never know the outcome until you do something.
The two characters i chose was Lord Hamlet and Ophelia because they are two people with a special bond, they are attracted to each other. It's a relationship thats hard to be with because of all the differnet situtations happening in their lives. Love is very mysterious and intersting. Also love can make people act or think different. Lord Hamlet and Ophelia are two young people that have a strong connection between trhemselves. Also thes characters are two very important people in the play.

The strand I chose to focus on is Flora. I think this is interesting because it has more than one
meaning to it. Flowers could represent love and happiness, but it could also represent death.
The characters i've choosen to focus on is Hamlet and Claudius.
I picked Hamlet because he's the protagonist, so I figured I would have more to write about. I think Claudius will also be important because i think Hamlet will find himself in conflictions with his uncle throughout the whole play
